I have a "73 Stingray Coupe. I have had this car for going on 30 yrs.. AND yes, through raising a family it has been only slightly neglected. The car has been off the road, in barn storage for 3 yrs.My brother has had it for the last year doing some little cosmetic work to the inside and some underneath work. Mufflers, brakes. I used to be able to "talk corvette" , but need to get back into it. I know the trouble I was having before I put it up a while ago was the valve springs kept breaking and I would replace them as needed. Well it was running real bad the last time it was on the road and did not replace the spring and did it bend a rod? I don't know. Anyway....my brother takes it to a cheve dealer in Newport, NH and finds many little things and ends up doing a complete motor job, keeping as close to original as possible. I have all receipts. (included new clutch, water pump, fuel pump). A $4000 bill ! I live 4 hours away in Delanson NY from where the car was worked on. Mistake, not sure. Driving it when I got it back and I don't think it is right. Quite a grinding noise when starting it, after 3 - 4 starts I don't hear it anymore. Tonight there was a tapping/rapping. Almost sounded like started but i don't think so. I will call up to that garage and talk to them about it, as they said all work guaranteed....But not easy for me to get back to. Does any one know of a good vette mechanic in the tri city area? This $ took up the expected painting i was hoping for this fall. If anyone can guide me, I would certainly be grateful!! Thanks Diane

diane,
i also have a 73 and i'm doing 90% of the work myself,i bought all the repair/trouble shooting manuals & read-read-read then i tackle the problem, that's the best way,you need to get those nails dirty or pay the high cost of repair, you can do it.

Help is on the way!

Valve springs breaking..EEEEKKKK! that's bad!

Usually due to the wrong cam being put in or REALLY cheap springs or wrong springs.

The valve springs keep the valve UP,, if the spring is really broke.. the valve will be down... meeting the top of the piston.. beating it to death...along with other BAD things.

So is the car still making the tic?

Is it worse at idle?..

We need more info.. and are you going to do the work?
