I need opinions quick on my 71' LT1. I just took it in for a tune up and valve adjustment. I stopped by to see how things were going and the guy started the car, ran great. I now have no lifter noise... huh? no lifter noise? I don't think this is good. Owning Fords with solids for 20 years I know they make noise. Are Chevy solids noisey when adjusted correctly? Please respond A.S.A.P

Solids are quiet when properly adjusted ,,,,,,,, I have been running them on one vehicle or another since the late 50's ............. yikes I'm getting to be a geezer

Thanks, now if I can get more opinions to sum up your thoughts I shall rest and quit bugging the mechanic. My Boss 302 makes noise as have all of my factory hipo Fords, this is bugging the heck out of me. Regards, Mike.
 
Solid lifter cars are really not all that noisy when adjusted correctly and the engine is in top tune. However just to be safe ask the technician what he did just to be safe for your own comfort. :D

Positivley Ken, I just started my 62 for the hell of it and they should make a little noise but smooth anyway. A little hard to really hear over my off road exhaust of 2 1/2 into 2 1/4 stainless pipes. :L

I keep forgetting but I will have my daughter send the check for the supporting membership. The least she can do for all the money I spent sending her through Law School. Those credit hours really cost a lot of cash today as compaired to when I went through. One more daughter to finish and I think I`ll get a new Vette to celebrate for myself. I`m running out of Vettes, the one still in school crashed my 86, and then she took my 84 and it was promptly stolen. She knows better than ask for the 62. ;LOL
 
You should have some lifter noise but not alot, Doesn't the mechanic know how he adjusted them? It would be a totally different adjustment procedure for solid lifters, If he adjusted them for hydraulic you would probably have an awfully hard time starting it as I did this with my first corvette not realizing someone had put a solid lifter in it.

As Promised

Well, after shopping all day on Saturday at the auto swap here in San Diego looking for Boss parts I was beat. Yesterday (as promised) I took LT1 out for a nice drive to check out my new tune-up and ease my concerns about the lifters noise or lack of. I am happy to report the car runs very well and no over heating or rough idling. So it appears the valves are adjusted correctly and all of my planets are in alignement.

I would ask the mechanic how he adjusted the lifters just to be safe. My 1972 Chevrolet (which includes Corvette) Service manual shows that the 255hp 350 engine valve lash is .024 for intake and .030 for exhaust. I think that it just has to have the "good ol solid lifter click" with that kind of clearance.

I wonder if he set them hot and running, (lots of oil splash, so probably not running) or cold. If cold, I've been told that the settings need to be at least .002 greater to allow for expansion.

If he set them as hydraulics by tightening them til no noise and then backed off, you might be ok in normal driving, but trying to run it at high RPM might cause you problems.

I have the old 65 Fuelie "30/30" cam in my 63, and it's NOISY. As I remember, the original cam was noisy too. It was only .008 for intake and .018 for exhaust.
