I am actively looking for a C3 Corvette as some of you know. And I have found a 79 with low miles for a very good price that I intend to see tommorrow. But I have also found a 92 Vette that is very nice and priced only $500.00 more than the 79 I have found. Of course the 92 has many more miles but is still very nice. What would you guys do? I have reached a "cross-roads" in my search and dont know what to do...........any ideas? :confused

I need to hear your thoughts rather quickly as I have to make a decision soon............a vintage low miles C3 or a nice C4 newer technology????

HELP!!!

Jeff

Let me guess what the answer will be in the C3 section.
:D

Two questions come to mind: is the Shark ready to drive and you won't have to worry about costly repairs right away; and are you ready for a lot of routine maintenance/repair work that the high-mileage C4 will almost assuredly require? ;)

The "Shark" is low miles, needs an A/C compressor, receiver/dryer and associtated work but its only got 27,000 miles and shows it. The 92 has about 90,000 miles and I guess needs nothing now but a butt to occupy the seat and drive it home. It too looks very nice and has chrome wheels...The 79 however will need some things but nothing major other than a/c work. The price is almost the same to buy either car.

Of course my 19 year old daughter likes the 92 but sees my point in the ownership of the 79...........as I used to own a 79 a few years ago.......I never thought that trying to buy a Vette could be SO HARD!!! :hb

Jeff

depends on the use also...

is it a pampered weekender or a daily driver? 79 is the most popular year and the 92 is a sweet ride....i would go c-3 on one hand and c-4 on the other...your right...tough question!
but its the way its gonna be used that i would look at..and the first line in your thread...
"I am actively looking for a C3 Corvette as some of you know"

we should all be so "unfortunate"!...er..."fortunate"...
well it looks like im no help at all!
Good luck...im sure you will be happy either way ! Chas:beer

Since the price is so close and you seem just as interested in both cars you might consider cost of ownership as a "tie-breaker."

Look at how much each car needs to make it what you want, find out what insurance will cost on both and determine if fuel efficiency means anything to you.

If that doesn't tip the scales, get a quarter. . . :)

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be happy either way you go!

It all depends on what you're looking for; what your intended use is for the Vette you purchase. If you're looking for a fun driver with no immediate maintenance, go newer. If you're wanting a car to tinker with, go older.

Well folks the decision was made today at 1:47PM Eastern time. I saw the 79, drove the 79, looked at the 79, drove the 79 again, and guess what, I bought the 79! Its a true 27,000 miles original car! Its Yellow with Oyster leather. I see that there were fewer Yellow cars produced in 79 than any other color. I guess that makes it more valuable? There are a few minor details to do like the a/c repair for one and fix the sticky tachometer but all in all the 79 won out by virtue of the fact that it will be worth more in the future in its present state then the 92 would have been. Where can you find a 79 with only 27,000 miles?? I will be picking the car up in about a week from now when the title transfer work is finalized and I get a few days off to fly over and drive that bad-boy home! I can hardly wait till that day and happy that my hunt is finally over.

I am truly satisfied with my purchase. As I proceed with the slow and steady job of making this car just what I want I'll keep you all posted. I am sure I'll be asking plenty of "how-to" questions so get ready for some silly questions!!

Thanks to those of you that have been patient with me and my posts. I really am glad I found this board so keep up the good work. :Twist

Oh yea and one more thing. I plan on taking this 79 Vette to the Lowes Motor Speedway in the spring for the Auto Fair and put it on display. I did that with my other 79 some years ago and really had a good time and met alot of fine people.

Jeff

Congratulations Jeff!

One good thing about the 79 is it is now 25 years old. In many parts of the country, that will exempt you from having to have the emissions tested each year, and qualifies for classic car status.

Post some pictures when you can!
