I came across this picture, and thought about posting it in the "Show a Picture of Your Vette" thread. But since this isn't actually my Vette, I thought I'd probably give it a thread of its own.

Anyone ever see a mod like this? Would you do something like this to your C5?

A guy here in our local club has the first kit offered. I'll look to see if I have any stills of it; I know I've got it on video. ;)

Looks pretty cool, Ken. At least, I kinda like it. But a $2500 mod? For doors?

How high do the doors actually go up...can you get in the car in the position in the above picture? and also do you have to manually lift the doors like that or is there an electric motor to lift it?:confused :w

This is what the West Coast Corvette website says in their description of the overhead doors:

Give your C5 a more exotic look with this bolt on vertical door kit. Installation requires some cutting (See instructions below) However, no modifications to the stock wiring harness are required. This kit also makes it much easier for you to get in and out of your vette. The purchase of aftermarket doors is not necessary as this kit uses your factory doors. And, as an added bonus, this process is reversible. Due to the design of these doors, you can always return your doors to the stock hinges if you want to. Installation costs are not included. Installation is about 6 hours.
Thus, from this description, and a picture of the parts, it does not appear there's any kind of motor. But you raise a good question: how do the doors stay up while they're up?

They also don't give the height dimension, but they do have some cool pictures that you can estimate the height from. With my tiny one-car garage in my Townhome, it would certainly save on the potential daily hazard of bumping my door into the wall when I open it.

John's was free, seeing as he was the guinea pig for the C5 setup. :cool

Torch, that is as high as the doors go; it ain't that hard to get in. I do question the strength of the hinges though - the C5s doors are pretty heavy. It'll be interesting to see how long they last.

You simply lift the door - it's got hydraulic assists. No motorized as far as I know.

I like that you don't have to replace the stock doors, but you're right Ken, those doors do have some weight in them.

As for getting into or out of them in the rain, I don't know that this would be a problem any worse than getting into or out of them the way the doors open now. In fact, if the door lifts up, rather than out, in theory, you should be able to get into or out of the car more easily without obstruction.

I never cease to be amazed by the things people will do to a car.

Cheers!

As I've always said: "Whatever floats yer boat!" I don't particularly care for the mod, but to each his own. :cool

Have seen these advertised in some Corvette magazines Patrick. Not my cup of tea but I can see the appeal from an exotic point of view, example; Lamborghini. It appears to me that the lower front quadrant of the door blocks part of the entry. These doors, in stock configuration, are long and opening does present problems if another car is parked too close so maybe this solves that. What's next, a hood that opens sideways like an old Buick? LOL! :L

i dont really like that mod on any of the cars except a lambo

it looks way too cheezy when a civic has it at a car show lets not stoop to their level

we have a great image with our cars i wouldnt do any thing crazy like that and spend

2 thousand dollars. but thats just me like ken said "what ever floats ur boat"

:L Now the only space concern would be the ceilings when the door is opened fully up...:beer

$2500 would buy me a whole lot of go fast stuff! :D

I agree with Edmond, I could spend the money on much cooler stuff. I think Vober said it looks cheesy and I agree with him as well. I saw them for sale at Carlisle last week. I'm not exactly sure but I think the price tag was near $2500 too.

I can't deny that $2500 would provide some nice performance enhancements on any Vette. I just thought this was an intriguing picture when I saw it.

If I won the lottery, would I do this mod, too? I'd have to give that some thought. Right now, I'd say no. I'd use the money to buy a place with a bigger garage so that I wouldn't have to worry about bumping my door in the wall when I opened it. :L
