my father has a '99 hardtop/coupe. he bought it used from a dealer and swears it's the fastest car he has ever had! a few weeks ago he got a letter from the dealer he bought it from. they were wanting to buy it back from him and were willing to hook him up on the deal. he wasn't interested, but did go to another dealer for a recall on the seatbelts. when the dealership punched in the vin number it came up as a '99 Z06!! i told him that it wasn't until '01 that they produced a Z06. what is up with this? anyone else come across this?? i still haven't looked at the RPO codes to verify, but who knows?

You're correct in that the Z06 wasn't offered until 2001. There are a lot of styling cues to distinguish the Z from a '99 hardtop/fixed roof coupe (FRC). That dealer must not have been too familiar with Corvettes. (I say this tongue-in-cheek) Outwardly, there will be a brake air duct in front of each rear wheel, red brake calipers, mesh grills in place up front and Z06 badging. Now, is it possible someone modified a Z06 to resemble a standard FRC? Who knows but the VIN #'s should be checked to be sure. Love to see a photo of your dad's ride.:)

Either there's a computer error or someone is BS'ing you.

There were no 99 Z06es, although 99 Hartops were all Z51s.

But...I'd keep that secret to yourslef, take the car to that dealer which wants to buy it back, tell them it's the only 99 Z06 built and ask 75,000 for it.;)

Ask Hib...

Hello Hib, & Everybody :w

Hib, maybe you could answer something for me which I am unclear about ? I have a '99 FRC, which has factory installed HUD, with fog lights and the active handling suspension. My car is also white in color and has the dual climate controls. A good friend of mine says there were less than 300 hundred '99 FRC's made with these options, the color white and HUD being the most rare ? If you need the vin # please just PM me and I will gladly send it to you ! BTW, I just installed the predator programming, and with nothing else except shortie headers, magnaflow x-pipe, Borla Stingers and 4.10 gears and Vortex cold air intake, I laid down 318.9 rwhp and 320.6 rwtq. We did see a high of 321 rwhp, except the timing was a little high and it activated the KR at the top of the rpm's so we pulled 1 degree of timing out of the curve, and 318 is where we nailed it down ! Thank's.....

12% of all '99 C5's were fixed roof coupes; or 4031. Eight percent of those (311) were white. 483 had the Head Up Display. Check out the numbers here: http://www.fatherlarryscorvetteshop.com/new_page_4.htm#Hardtop Production

Scroll down to Hardtop Production Numbers. :)

Thanks Patrick. Bits and pieces of useful and useless information, that's me. HA! I'm still learning my way around here too, LOTS of corners and crannies to explore. :CAC

Honestly, I think you have a few more ponies in there. Look at my sig for my SAE corrected #'s. Only mod is quad Stingers. I still have the stock airbox. I was there with another member that had a 1999 FRC. His #'s were ever so slightly better than mine. He did buy it used, but he feels pretty sure it's still 100% stock.

What brand dyno? We were on a Dynojet.

What brand of Dyno...

Hello Everybody.. :w

The Dyno was a DynoJet, I can't remember the exact model #. It was an extremely hot day, however the guy doing my tuning said the most RWHP he had ever seen a stock LS1 put to the rear wheels was 315. I did 312 on the first two baseline pulls, and even peaked at 321, however, from what I have gathered from posts on the 'net, you lose an average of 8 HP for the lower gears, in my case being 4.10's.

That could be it (the gears). I didn't even think about that. I'm going to be going back in a couple of months after I do my Blackwing. I post the updated results before and after the Blackwing then.

C-ya!

The telltale sign of a Z06 is digit #8 in it's VIN.
Non Z06 C5's, digit 8 = G
Z06 C5's digit 8 = S

No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Everything else in the replies above also stand true.

That 99 is not a Z06, BUT if the selling dealer thinks it is and wants to give your dad a great deal on a real Z06, then he should take em up on it.

Check the VIN

I'm looking at this a little differently. Why did they want to buy the car back so bad? Did they find a problem with the VIN after the deal closed? Wrong VIN on car due to someone playing games??? Was it a reputable dealer or a corner lot? I would have one of the members run a carfax or VIN search. I would be worried about some funny business with the VIN. I would hate to see the VIN come back to a totaled z.

I agree!!

it wasn't a corner lot wanting to buy it back. it is a reputable dealer. in the letter they said that they had a high demand for the '99 coupe/hardtop. sounds pretty strange,but.....that was it. i still haven't checked the vin or rpo code out myself yet,but am planning to. just been too damn busy. i'll keep you posted.

I worked for a Chevy dealer about 12 years ago, as a salesman. We would comb through old customers who we thought might be interested in trading. Most of these were Vette, Suburban and Pick-up customers. That might be all it is, a hungry salesman fishing for a deal.
