1973 4-speed Coupe FOR SALE/ SOLD!!!!
Ok....long story short........New........balanced and blueprinted small block....rebuilt M20 4 speed......New (rebuilt) 3:55 rear end....new HD ujoints in half shafts....new ujoint in drive shaft.......RAM HD powergrip clutch......only 37 miles since rebuild......

PROBLEM: when I take off......(1900-2200 or so RPM) there is a what I call a somewhat mild to severe vibration through 1/2 of first gear and 1/2 of second...as soon as the RPMs cxome through more it goes away....at 35/40/45/50/55/60/65 MPH everything is smooth as pie...is this a CLutch adjustment issue?????????

Sorry....motor mounts.........new Energy Susp...poly mounts.....

sounds like it might just be that nice new clutch of yours. Did you have the fly wheel balanced? If so, it could just be the clutch seating itself in. I've had a few extra grippy clutches feel that way for the first say 300 miles.

I would lok at the clutch again,it should be smooth engagement.

Flywheel IS balanced and machined. Is it a clutch ADJUSTMENT issue?

I don't think it's an adjustment issue... It's a needs to break in issue. There isn't really anything to adjust is there?

not that I know of....just the engagement rod...but like I said...once we get through the rpms.....its smooth as can be........from 25 to 65 mph...so Im sure its not a dirve line issue...Ill drive it some more and see if it breaks in better...whats is the std mileage for breaking in a clutch....? (200 miles or so) thanks.....

It's pretty difficult to understand the symptoms from your posts but, is this an rpm-specific problem or a vehicle speed specific problem?

Also, does this vibration only occur when the clutch is slipping during engagement or does clutch action not affect it?

Lastly, what about the frequency of this vibe? Is it low, such as a shaking? Is it medium, such as a tire out of balance at highway speed? Or, is it a high frequency, such as a bad wheel bering or little ripple strips would make?

It's only when he is going through the gears... once he stops shifting it's not there. It's gotta be something in the drive line.. clutch related.

specifically when I am at a stop light and just starting out.....get some rpm...let out the clutch. and boom........low vibration.....once it goe higher in rpm it goes away...press clutch...go to grab 2nd gear and there it is when I start to let the clutch out again.......once it gets higher again in RPM its gone....like said before....30 to 60 mph...smooth as pie....

Check your trans mount for separation - when they deteriorate you'll get the symptoms you describe; torque-related.

wb,

Is it smooth while in each gear, and get's rough as the clutch starts to grab? As soon as it's fully engaged it is smooth again until you shift?

Dave

Yep, press clutch its smooth of course...begin to let clutch out it shudders and vibrates until it is fully disengaged and then press it back to hit 2nd gear and let it out as soon as you let it out it starts to shudder until fully disengaged.....

the adjustment rod......under the master cylinder...if I have it adjusted out to far...am I disenagaging the clutch to far???the adjusting nuts are at the end of the rod....if I bring them in...it will still disengage the clutch but wont have so far to go to reengage it....maybe???

i cured this in my old truck, but you won't do the method. i stopped the truck against the garage, slowly let the clutch out and held the truck against the barn while i burnt off the high spots.i wouldn't do it to a c3 cause of the bumpers, but it works.

what kind of facing does the clutch have?Is it organic or is it a full metalic or ceramic face?
if its any of the later two them will engage for crap untill they seat in.ID get about 100 miles on it and actually if your running the metalic or ceramic facing give it hell a couple times that will fix it. Also make absolutly sure you diddnt get grease or oil on the clutch friction areas that will cause a chatter also.Ive seen over greased throw out bearings sling goo all over hell do the same thing.

also id check the mounts just because there new dont mean there ok.Sometimes new mounts may vary in hight and cause a missalighnment.case in point buddy of mine changed his tranny mount diddnt put back the shims or the braket for the convertor, the tranny sat at the wrong angle causing a vibration.Stacking the shims back in there and checking the driveline angle cured his ills.

hmmm...thats a good one too.....Im pretty sure I put it in correctly....I didnt think there was a "FRONT" and a "BACK"....learn something new everyday.....
