I had my 97 serviced this week LOF at a Home Chevrolet in Santa Maria, CA. and about 30 minutes after I had left the Dealer I noticed that my oil pressure gauge was pegged at 80PSI. I checked the digital monitor and it read 130 PSI, which scared the hell out of me for the moment. I took right back to the dealer and they did a quick check and said it was probaly was in the electrical system, as the gauges read the same with the engine on or off.
I couldn't leave it at that time but im supposed to take it in Friday morning and leave it.

Has anyone out there had any similar problems, or any suggestions.
Best Regards

Oil Pressure

c4c5specialest, what do you think of this problem???????

shorted sending unit or shorted wire from the sending unit. unplug the wire at sending unit if your psi on the gauge drops to zero change the sending unit. if it stays up look for the wire grounded somewhere.

Thanks for the advice...
The Chevy garage checked it out today and replaced the sending unit. Funny thing was the parts mgr 98 Vette had the same problem the day before. I wonder if this is much of a problem for Corvettes?????????
Thanks Again

It's a relitively common problem at least its a cheap fix.:pat

The part was only $60, but they had to take off the intake manifold to get to it which was 3.5 hours labor which ment buying a gasket set for about $65 for a grand total of $369.
Not cheap in my book. Or did they go about it the wrong way????

You have to take off the intake manifold and 3.5 hours is reasonable...you don't want your car hacked right? They charged you correctly.

I had one that took a lightning strike sitting shut off of course, in the guys garage. It blew out every computer in the car and it also wiped out the oil sending unit. I spent 15 hours diagnosing and fixing the car. It took me 3 hours to do the sending unit and I'm no novice.

Thanks for the info, I didn't really think that they over charged me as the people there were very nice to me and seemed genuine, but it was my first "Service" experience with them and you never know. Your confirmation set my mine at ease!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Again

I hear ya....If anyone has a question on times or charges just ask me or c4c5, we'll tell you how it is and a realistic expectation as most jobs are not as straight forward as you might think.

Personally, I would listen to Chick before me.
She is the goddess, and there are NONE HIGHER in the Corvette service arena, with more knowledge or experience.
This is FACT.

c4c5 is The Master and equal. His dedication and knowledge rivals any seasoned tech.

la vett -- you're not the only one. looks like i've got the exact same problem with my 98. i'm thinking about doing it myself, but it looks like there's a lot to screw up around the intake manifold...anyone got an extra $360?;LOL

Sigshooter,
Sorry to hear about your oil pressure problem, I thought about letting it alone for awhile to see if it would correct its self, as you would have to have some serious engine problems to get oil pressure that high, also it would give you some time to see get some competitive quotes on getting it fixed if it doesn't self correct...........
Good Luck

i've got a buddy coming down on memorial day who has a lot of chevy engine experience. i think we're going to take a shot at it. if i remember from another post, c4c5specialist stressed how important it was to replace the manifold gasket, use locktight and torque everything to correct specs. c4c5/chick, am i missing anything? i'll be sure to post the results after we get done.:cool :cool

la vett -- i think you're right, if the pressure was truly at 128 psi, i think i'd be noticing some major differences in the way the engine was running...if at all.:Twist

I was just about to post this question...

My C-5 starting reading 130 psi yesterday. Can one of you tell me where to locate the sending unit?

Thanks so much!!

Lauren

Vettgirl, sorry to hear about the high oil pressure indication. The sending uint on the C5 is buried under the intake manifold, which is why it take 3hours of labor to replace a $60 part. Sigshoter was going to try and change it himself so you might ask him how he made out. Also talk to Vettechick she is a technician and has changed many of them.
Good Luck

Thanks LA VETT!

I freaked when I noticed it, and have parked the car. I am so relieved to hear it is a common problem!

Well, I would appreciate any info from Vettechick or Sig - I prefer my husband to work on my car, so anything you can tell me to make his job easier will be greatly appreciated!

:)

i'm still cruising around with the pressure at 129. my buddy's coming down from new york for memorial day weekend so it'll be about a month before we try it. it doesn't seem too dificult, just labour intensive. i figure if we set a side a whole day, we should be good to go. i'll report on how it goes after we take a crack at it.:cool :cool :cool

Thanks, Sig...

I was just wondering if it could wait until the week of the 28th, since I'll be on vacation and it won't matter if my car is down for a day or two? How long has your's been doing this? I won't mess anything up driving around like this for a week or two, will I? It's a new car (to me!), and I'm still in neurotic new-owner mode...

:confused

the way i see it (and more knowledgeable people can chime in at any time), is that it's clearly an erroneous reading. if the car was really experiencing 128+ oil pressure, it either wouldn't be running or it would be very noticeable if it was. my car is running/performing fine, so until i get it fixed, i consider it a car without an oil pressure gauge (like many cars). it's been doing it for a couple of months, so i don't mind going another month. as long as it's not degenerative, i can deal with it. however, if you don't feel comfortable driving it, or if it's not performing like it should, i would definitely take care of it right away. hope this helps and does add to your ambiguity.;)
