It's almost emissions time and I need to pass this year! :L

Will a higher octane gas burn cleaner and therefore emit lower emissions?

Tell you what I did when I was in New Jersey, and it always seemed to work for me. First, I'd do a cursory tune up, (plugs, any wires that needed replacement, etc) then go down and pump in half a tank of 93 octane Exxon, and dump in a few bottles of Fuel Injector Cleaner and went driving for a couple hours. When I got back, I'd change the oil, filter and fuel filter, then pump in another half tank of 93 octane, and another bottle of FI Cleaner, check the Gas Tank Cap and while it was hot, take it on down for the test.

As long as I was prepared, I never failed. My son didn't do what I did and just drove his "bomb" down and the lack of gas tank cap was the first thing they failed him on, and it went downhill from there. A week later, after following the old man's example and words, he passed. Down here they don't have them yet (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!)!!!!!

I was told to not use FI cleaner on the Bosch injectors because of problems with the o rings.

all no lead gas ( all brans that is sold as auto fuel ) has injection cleaner in it .
in the early 90's the manifactures foud that the fuel that you burn in your car afects the amount of polution it puts out. clean injectors polute less. your car will run better and polute less and pass emishion on good fresh gas than on any thing else. I've have had friends that have put alcohol and all sorts of fuel addetives thinking that was nessary to pass emissions, truth is it onley hinders what the cemest that fromulates fuel do. a good sorse of info on this suject can be found in the book CORVETTE FUEL INJECTION and ELECTRONIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT by Charles O. Probst

Yup. I have been told by many on the forum and off the forum to only run Chevron Techron fuel system treatment, I think is what its called. It's in a black bottle and it to my knowledge is the closest thing to the actual stuff from GM. I run two bottles every 6,000 miles or so.

That's the stuff in the black bottle right? It's so pricey in this area; $10 per bottle!:(

Edmund,
Are you in the Chicago area? You're required to have emission tests up there? Fortunately nothing like that here in the downstate area.

I only use the Techron stuff, only once a year.

Higher octane wont help you pass emissions at all.

Yeah and they're strict about it too. For the OBDII cars, they hook the car up to the diagnostic port instead of running it.

Even my low emissions 94' Toyota Camry barely passed last week.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought you weren't suppose to put any additives in the fuel tank. I thought the book that came with the car specified this. I haven't put anything in the corvette tank yet but premium fuel. Maybe I read no oil additives. I forget. Interesting to hear what others have used. Emmission testing in NJ is tough ... I always had the car up to temp when ever i had it inspected. Alwas passed so far. One tuneup at around 60K.

The only reason I use it is because c4c5specialist told me it was safe to. He said it was just like the GM fuel system cleaner.

Additive, (Fuel Injector Cleaner), Reply!

I'd heard both sides of the story, and I consulted my mechanic(s) up there when I did it. The theory is, if you put it in a double shot and just a half tank of 93 octane about a week before you schedule your visit to DMV Inspection (or your favorite mechanic to whom you'll for over the better part of a c-note), but I'd just drive for a few hours and then refill my tank with a load of 93 octane and another bottle of FI cleaner. This is to clean up the garbage in the fuel system and maybe some of the valves.

Do an oil change, and replace the fuel filter and if necessary the air cleaner. Then run on down to the inspection station, which in my case was my mechanic's about a 45 minute drive up the road, the car was good and warm and everything would go smooth as silk. Not just my vette, but a couple of hondas, Olds Cutlass, Phord Crown Vic Station Wagon, an S-10 Blazer, Plymouth Valiant and a Lincoln Continental, over the 8 years I was there!

All I can say is, "It worked for me! No Guarantee!"

I bought a couple bottles of the Techron stuff yesterday; it came down in price, used to be $10 and it's down to $6 now. :D

I'm going to change out the EGR valve because my NOX readings are high (reference to your post on my EGR thread). At the same time; I should clean out the TB as well; don't think that's ever been done.

I'm going to pull each plug individually and make sure they're still fresh; they're Bosch +4's that are less than 11,000 miles/2 years old. I'm also going to change out the fuel filter; it's cheap and easy to do. Did it 2 years ago but put on a FRAM unit and I'm strictly anti-FRAM now. Probably go with Purolator.

1/2 a tank of gas and 2 bottles of Techron. Then fill it up with 1 bottle of Techron and go for the test. Then I'll let everyone know in a couple of weeks how it went. :w
