I don't think the insulation was really for heat or sound as much as it was for fire. If you engine caught on fire the theory was plastic clips would melt and it would fall on engine and put out fire. Atleast that was what I was always told.
That seems to be a popular "internet legend", but it's incorrect; the insulation was intended as a sound deadener, just as it was on premium steel cars.
