66 coupe,72 vert,
Just had the 66 painted and would like to hear some recommendations, in reference to protecting the hood from the enormous amount of heat coming from the engine bay. Prior to my paint job the hood paint was cracked from the engine bay heat.

You know when I first got my 66 I was at a car show and a fellow came up to me and said you better cover your air cleaner or else the reflection from the sun reflecting off of it will burn and crack the paint.

Sure enough there were burn and crack marks from the sun

Larry, I KNOW I cringe whenever I hear about and think about THAT subject........ I owe my entire new paintjob to the sun reflection off the air cleaner right ater I bought the car.
Yep, if the car is outside and the hood is up, my air cleaner cover is on - no exception and no excuses. If I had only known about that issue BEFOREHAND!!

I am familiar with the cause and type of hood damage you are refering to, but my concern is while driving with hood closed. Can the engine bay heat while driving cause any hood paint damage. If so what do you recommend.

If engine heat could be a problem, I'd know it. 502 cubic inches with Hooker headers means extreme under-hood heat.

After 8,000 miles, the paint is still laughing it off. ;)

I haven't had problems with my hood paint. It's been about a year now. I do watch the chrome air cleaner cover matter closely.

The underhood blankets you see on C3s were actually not for heat insulation. They were sound deadeners.

I forgot to mention.............my entire underhood area is painted. Even the hood, directly above the engine, and the inner fenders right beside the headers.

The paint says, "Mehhhh". ;)

It still looks just like that.

I'm with 67heaven. The underside of my hood is painted body color, which makes the underside of the hood easy to clean and wax, and makes air cleaner covers unecessary. My fresh air intake ducts are body color too.
