I cannot find the horn on my 81. (it might have been removed by the previous owner..who knows) Where is it supposed to be located? All I know is I don't have any horn sound and Chilton doesn't show where it's supposed to be. If I can find the horn , it would be tested before I pursue any other angles...such as the horn button, column, etc.

On my 82, if you leave the headlights in the UP position, take off the bezel and look into the fender, there they are. Not sure if your 81 is the same, but it can't hurt to look

Believe it or not, the 1981 has 2 horns ;) You should be able to see them once the hood is open. They are almost centered under the front end. One is a hi pitch and the other is low pitch. I don't remember which one is which, I can look it up if you like.

Edit: The upper horn is the Low Pitch and the bottom horn is the High Pitch. The GM Shop manual shows them mounted center under the nose in front of the radiator ;) (Section 8A pages 54 & 55)

thanks for the imput. this forum really works! Already looked there but will look again now that I know where they're supposed to be!

what a mess! the horns are hid between the back of the headlight & the front side of the car. even with a mirror you cannot see. by "feel" I was able to remove one for testing (ok) . all told, was approx. 2 hrs. removing /replacing one horn! Sometime I'll probable put a bracket in front of the radiator & mount them there.

Here is a scan of the horns from the GM Shop Manual ;)

rare81, you're a real winner! thanks for the scan of the horn location. "Sometime" I will relocate mine to that convenient location in the middle. I can only assume that mine have a different (& impossible) location due to being built in St. Louis rather than Bowling Green (?), or maybe mine was built on Monday.
Great response. thanks

horn problem

incidentially, the horn was ok, it didn't work because the fuse was gone. the fuse was gone becaues the previous owner took it out...because the interior lights stayed on..... the cause of this problem, after removing half the dash, was a small "courtesy light dimmer switch which was located behing the glove compartment .
I just got out of the boating additiction because I had to work on them for a whole week to get one good day of boating. Is this the same way?

Hey Jim welcome to Shark ownership ;)
It can be kinda bad, kinda.... it really depends on the previous owners and what their idea of fixing something was! Once you get the bugs worked out of you car.. they are pure pleasure.

I spent one whole winter under mine redoing the entire suspension, transmission, clutch, fly wheel, then drove it a couple of summers then made 2 trips from Modesto, CA to Bowling Green, KY.. and the only problem was an Alternator go south in Wyoming this last trip.. Now she is being a bit stuborn about the doors opening.. so next project is the door mech's.. Oh year the trip 2 years ago ... coming through Kansas City the signal lights develop a short in the steering column.. that was FUN, I ended up taking her into our local Chevy garage for that one.. :D

Hang in there, it is all WORTH IT!

Jim- welcome to the CAC! On reason I bought my car several years ago was to have something to tinker with and drive once in a while too. It was money well spent. If you get the chance post a picture of your 81.
