How big rear tires

I am currently running 255 60 15 rear tires. If I put on 275 or 295 wide what is the down side? Will they even clear the inside or will they throw rocks on the outside and damage the paint? Would a 17" rim or 18" rim somehow handle it better in those wider widths?
