How do I rig a temporary ignition

Hi Everyone,
Can anyone tell me the easiest way to rig a temporary ignition to test and break in my rebuilt 283 motor that sits on a restored chassis but does not have the body on. It is a 61 Vette. I have a pretty good idea how to do it but it seems someone out there always has a better plan. Thanks for any and all replies. :duh

set up a battery and saftley ground the motor to the battery.

next when you want to start it just bring a hot lead (that you can quickley disconect in a hurry if something goes wrong) to the ing side of the coil and the other side of the coil is the dist side.

now just take a battery wire from the starter and as soon as you touch it to battery the starter will crank

when you want to shut it off just disconect the wire to the coil

Thats about all there is to do it.

I have a tool since I was a kid it came in an old sears tune up kit.Its a button with two wires coming out and thats what I would use to crank over the motor I still use it all the time

this is the one sears still sells now

couple of things to be carefulll of

1-have a way to shut off the motor in an emergenct
2-have a way to keep the motor cool ,if your using a radiator make sure there is no way for it to pull into the motor and get destroyed.
3-you gas supply should also be safley connected.

I always rig up a temporary instrument panel on a 2x4 frame with the coil, ignition switch, tach, oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges, fan circuits/relays, hot and ground terminal points, etc. for "first fire", and just tie-wrap the rig to the car's frame. All the looped/bundled wire you see is the rest of the body harness, not needed for engine start/run.

Yes, you do - if you look at my photo above, you'll see the ballast resistor mounted just outboard of the big Mallory coil.
