How do you paint vinyl?

I have been reading all this info on painting vinyl with amazement. I never thought anything could be done to vinyl to bring back the quality such as painting it. Doesn't the paint fade or scrape off when hit with something?? Isn't the color on the origional vinyl part of the material and not a surface treatement? Just how durable and long lasting is the paint?

Bill
Sometimes the vinyl is part of the original part, sometimes not. When the surface is properly prepared, the paint bonds to the vinyl, forming a microscopically thin surface layer which resists scrapes and peeling. The paint will fade in time, the same as the original vinyl did. It's durable enough for regular usage but not as durable as the original vinyl. That being said, the interior of my car doesn't get abused quite as much as it would if it was a daily driver so if it lasts and looks good for 10+ years, what more can you ask? I wouldn't recommend painting more than once to avoid buildup. :w

OK on everything Mac. Sounds like getting the surface prepped and cleaned of wax, and other contaminates would be most important for a good bond. Thanks for the information and the reply.

Bodyshop suppliers have cleaners which remove oils and silicons (as previously mentioned by miratech)and they also sell a surface preparation solution called 'vinyl prep' or similar. As a last step before painting, I wiped the vinyl down with a lintfree cloth and vinyl prep which air drys quickly, then shot the paint; no primer. It covered perfectly and has lasted more than five years now with no degradation whatsoever.

Hi Mac,
Can you let us know who the Manufacturer of your Vinyl paint is? I'm looking a doing a complete colour change in my 79 (Beige to black). This would include steering column and wheel etc. I plan to install new seat covers and foam. ANy input would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought paint from Mid America. Worked great. Here is some info on the other products they sell. Plastic prep is a mixture of xylene, toluene, and varsol, I got a can of this from Duplicolor before I know what it was. PLastic bonding clear is similar to other plastic adhesive products for use of some plastics. The Vinyl prep smells like ammonia not sure what it is. I found that TSP (tri-sodium Phosphate, used for cleaning grease/wax/tar from walls worked good) then I used a little bit of Vinyl prep.

I'm still on this training course, away from home, but I'll provide details once I get back as I can't recall the name off the top of my head. Beige (I presume you mean saddle?) to black would be easier than black to beige as there should be no coverage issues.
