I have heard from many people that on a 95 model you can reprogram the computor to turn the cooling fans on at a lower tempature. How is this done? Do I have to have a dealer do this?

Thanks, Goose

Many people have the knowledge and equiment to reburn your chip or burn you a diferent one relatively inexpensively. There are a couple fairly inexpensive units that you can buy for basic reprograming for a single car. Sorry I don't know the names of them though.

Hang out for a while and someone will help you. I think you may have to change your thermostat to do it properly. Also, I think I've read that you can buy a kit from any of the usual corvette aftermarket houses that have sensors that will turn the fans on earlier. You can also rewire to turn one or both fans on manually for very little money. :w

Most likely the dealer won't do this. You may look to Hypertech, Diablo, or Predator, I think they all make programmers that will plug into your car. If I'm not mistaken you can "flash" program your car. It just updates the data that you want changed. Your car is an OBD 2 type plug right? The ALDL connector near your right knee will have 14(?) terminals if it is OBD 1 and more terminals if its OBD 2. The only other way to do it would be to remove your MEMCAL that has your EPROM on it from your ECM then burn a new chip and install it on your MEMCAL and plug it in.

Hope this helps

That sounds like more than I want to get into, I may Just get a manual switch, or one of those lower temp cooling switches I have seen.
Thanks for help.

I just did a manual switch in my car... let me know if you want more info on it. All you need is a switch and some wire. should cost you less than $5 to do it yourself

Any info on the manual switch would be appreciated.

Thanks, Goose

If yours has two fans on the back side of the radiator there should be two relays on the frame rail near the headlight and radiator shroud on the drivers side. If you take pin F of each to ground the fans should come on. Use some wire splice clips and run a wire back to the interior and to one leg of a single throw switch. Run the other leg of the switch to ground and when you want the fans on just hit the switch.

On mine pin F is a blue / black stripe wire the other is just blue I think.

Hope this helps.

Here's a pic of mine ... it was only temporary till I fixed the chip. I need to remove all the blue wire. My wire colors were light blue/black stripe and blue/white stripe. You may have to remove the relay and look inside the pins should be marked, but remember it plugs in opposite so remember which contact you are tracing back.

You may go with warren s's pics since they are the same year you would think the color codes would be the same.

Cooling a C4

If you want it to be automatic go to Eckler's and enter Fan Temp. There is an automatic fan kit for $40 that will do one or both at 3 different ranges.

The '96 needs to be reprogrammed at the ECM due to OBDII in '96

Remember that the all the time manual override uses alot of power from the alternator, uses more gas, and wears out the fans much quicker. They really aren't made to run all the time. The settings are just way up there for a higher average operating temp for better emissions.

Hope this helps.

Can't he use LT1edit and also do some other little tuning?

Wrong, the fans draw very little power once started, just a few amps. The alternator is way underloaded and does not produce any measurable drag by powering the fans. Remember that the fans will run if the AC is on, and the AC will go on even if you use ther front defroster. Just as you can use the AC all the time, running the fans when ever you want will not cause any problems.

Not sure Edmond, but I think so. The fan switch would be specific. He could call Bryan at PCMFORLESS and ask. I know that costs $175. It's the only way on II cars.

If it was me I would forget the switch and buy a hypertech unit or similar.
The units to reprogram the fans come with the programer.
you do not have a chip to burn your computer is programable, eather by a hand held unit costing 349.00 or send your computer to someone who will reprogram it for you about 250.00.
with hyperpuck you have to change your thermstat to a 160 or 180 and don't get coolent on the opti-spark dist. Also might as well do the coolent by pass.:)

Beating the heat is always a good discussion. Manual fan switches are OK but with all the sensors and computers it's a shame not to go automatic.

Warren, when my fans kick in the engine bogs from the alternator draw. After stabilizing it seems logical that those motors increase belt resistance and cost fuel. The main problem is the switch is cheap, but burned up cooling fans are not. That was my point. I know my '96, but I'm not positive on the best route for '95 and earlier as the OBD changed. I do know the quest continues for a bit cooler engine.
