How do you tell what type of coating you have on headers?

If any, if they've been running on the car for several thousand miles. I presently have a slight white color that has started to turn brown close to the heads most likely due to the heat.

Have you tried fine steel wool to remove the colour?

Thanks for the response Les, I'm not trying to remove the coating, I'm trying to figure out what type of coating I have............ if any at all.
