...."scary fast"?

I'm not sure, but I'm beginning to find out. :crazy

Really?

I'm guessing you have some miles on it now and you're testing the water a little eh?:lou

My thanks to Fuelie for talking me out of going the old race engine route. The difference between the old engine and the new 502 is night and day in terms of street responsiveness.

The old engine was all focussed on higher rpm horsepower and balls-to-the-wall racing.

The new engine (just a tick under 600 ft.lb. torque) combined with a 5-speed/rear gear combo (that equals 4.88:1 in 1st with the old Muncie!!!!!!) is right there....before I ask for it. Man!

First and second are just freakin' :crazy. I haven't had the nerve to push it in 3rd yet. :D

Have you hit the 500 mile mark yet? I can't imagine 500 cubes my 383 got real scary in 4th; seems those old cars get real twitchy at 110+ :D

TORQUE, it's all about TORQUE for a really fine street engine; you want that kick in the azz in the rpm range you drive in 99% of the time, not just at 6000+; have a hell of a time getting some of the younger guys who want "race engines" to understand that. Cinch up your belts and enjoy! :D

Bob

So what can I tell you,

first and foremost get used to the car and how it reacts in all condtions,Most folks think I am out of control while taking my car for a spin, but as hard as it is to belive .I understand it and am very comfortale with it.Its VERY predictable, stable, and safe.

That being said,Set the msd chip 300 rpms below the engines specs and put your foot into it and bounce that motor off the rev limiter while shifting the car as it is meant to be shifted.

I get excited just thinking about it.

Unfortunately the roads still have a little sand and salt on them and I would not trust traction quite yet (if you could call it traction)

Have fun and bee safe.Allthough my 66 is no race car,it always a thrill the first time I get back behind the wheel of it after driving my dailery driver for the last 8 months

67Heaven,
I can't imagine how much fun 600+ ft lbs of torque with that kind of gearing would be.

I'm having a pretty fun time with my "lowly" 500 ft lbs from my 383 with my 3.36 rear axle.

BTW, I just love your car. In my mind, you couldn't have done anything else to it to make it any better looking.

JohnZ,
You're absolutely correct about torque. I learned a long time ago that torque is way more fun that horsepower. Unfortunately it seems we all have to learn that the hard way.

As I said, the old 435 was worked over to focus entirely on the range from 5,500rpm and up. Lots of head porting and polishing, L-88 springs and valves, Holley 850 double on Torker Tarantula intake, Kustom sidemount headers and (get this) ZL-1 "180" cam. The lift and duration on this solid-lifter cam is so radical that we flycut the domed pistons to keep the parts from getting too friendly with each other. The idle had to be heard to be believed. But, how was it on the street? Boggy.....almost no vacuum at low rpms (read power brakes were very unhappy).....constant throttle blipping at stop lights to keep it from stalling. And any low speed pulling away from stop signs was a chore.

Fuelie and I had several conversations about the direction for the new engine. He can tell you that I said, "I'm willing to sacrifice some low-end responsiveness so as not to lose the "sound and feel" of that old 427." But, he kept talking and I kept listening.

So, I take it all back now. This roller cam engine is "instantly" there. How could injection be any more responsive? :confused

Once I head down the highway to Bowling Green, I may never go home. :D

How many rides will you give while in Bowling Green? Some of us really love Scary Fast.

Bob,

You definately have the best torque monster type set-up for the street. When I yearn for some wild tire shredding torque you can take me for a spin to sooth my soul. Of course if you really miss the high rpm stuff, just call me and I can take you for a 6500 rpm power shifting rip on Harmony Road:D

Take care,
Brian

Craig,

I'm very impressed with the all-new Vette Brakes suspension, although I haven't put it to any "serious" tests yet.

I mentioned that I haven't pushed it in 3rd gear yet. Of course, then there's 4th and then 5th. :crazy

;LOL

P.S. I'm no where near 500 miles yet, so I'm staying below 5,000rpm for the time being. God*, this is too much fun already.

Well Bob you had better get some more miles on it June will be here before you know it. I am undecided what to do with the 76, with the price of gas and Craig jr. with his learners permit the 383 might just give way to a 305 TPI. :L

Hello 67
You know, I only live an hour away from you! Maybe once it is broken in you will take me for a ride if I come down your way........(that was a direct hint!)

The neighbours all thought it was weird that they only resurfaced the road in 10" wide strips for about half a mile!;) Whenever it hits 5th reach for the glove box which has nitroglycerin spray, charged up paddles and packs of Depends on standby! Is it really true that the G force will take out the wrinkles and shave years off by the mile, if so please pick me up ASAP!:L

Seriously, you guys spending the time and planning/designing at the start was so smart and avoided so many potential problems, wise decision! Amazing combo when you two put all your knowledge together! Truly a one of a kind dream machine.

Man..if Bob's haven all this fun already and hasn't hit the 500 mile mark......I can't wait to fire my 502. I'm ready to call on that 567LBs ....The trick here is to finish the car and get the 500 miles on the motor and clutch in time for the Carlisle Infield 63-67 Sting Ray Registry Drag Races..!!!
