Ladies and Gentlemen,

I thought I got the deal of the century several weeks ago when I bought a 69 hardtop off of e bay. I got it and an extra decklid, spare tire carier and cover, including back glass for $227!! I was pretty excited. I have a 72 vette vert and I wanted something to protect it while i am rolling it around between shops (project) I paid 110 to deliver by truck and then waited the 5 days. They had my phone # and everything but proceded to just put it under my condo parking area!! I got home later and discoverd that it was almost destroyed!! The neighbor said he was watching it for me since it got there, so it came like that!!

Here is a pic and my question is , How much do you think I should claim in damages to get it fixed? What you all tell me is what I will ask , but I am sure since I am on the Mexican border, I can get it fixed and painted for what you'all suggest. Hopefully anyway. I have an excellent fiberglass man who is working on my 72 vette, he did my 77 and it came out awesome. It should be fixable right? The guy I bought it from is getting a hold of the shipping co. and he will let me know what they are going to do.

Thanks for any input and suggestions.

Just to fix it, maybe $250???

It is tough to really take a guess by the photo only. Of course, if it was fix it, prep the whole top, and paint the whole thing, maybe $700.

Maybe Paintdaddy will take a look at this thread.

What a bummer though.

At least I do believe it can be fixed, and you were going to have to paint it anyway....

I was thinking, say you have a new hardtop like this or a new hood or some other part in which you need to paint it because, well, it's not the same color of your Corvette. Would it be possible to match the exact color of your body in order to paint the hood/hardtop this? Or would it be a little off and then you would have two different colors? How would that work?

I can see why they didn't call you before delivering it. Was the glass and other parts already missing?

Tom

No, he took the glass out and embedded it in a looks to be professional glass shipping cardboard. The top didn't come with a headliner, I plan to do something like 69myway and use a pickup bedliner type surface on that. Other than that it came with most other parts, latches, ect.

69myway, Thanks for the input, still waiting for Paintdaddy, to help me.

how much

most freight companys allow 72 hours for you to file a claim, ask for a packing list or copy of original paperwork. piece count should be noted on the original, also condition of the freight at the time of the pick-up. freight companies are not looking to buy the freight they are hauling. if it needed repair at time of the p/u then they will hesitate on a claim, if not then claim the cost of what it will be to replace.;shrug

TR, they use computerized paint matching analysis. In fact, it's done every day right down the street at your local Lowes or Home Depot.

Really? That's good because otherwise it would be tough getting new exterior parts for your car, especially on the body, so the colors don't clash. Thanks for the info! :)

The computezed matching system is great for getting a close match but you should know that the new paint and the old paint will fade at different rates over time and the match may not be a perminent thing.

If this top was fine when sent to you and was packed properly by the seller and insured properly by the seller, then I would file a claim with the carrier for what you would normally have to pay for a top like this- $1500 to $2000 or so ought to cover it. If I were doing the work to rebuild the breakage, it would be about $450. Anyone who does good work will probably need that much or more I would think. Doing good work takes time. Time is worth money. And there ya have it.

I figured there would be some loophole if you were to repaint a part. I guess that's just the risk you'll have to take. :)

Hey paintdaddy, you out there ?

I need your input on this hardtop cost, to fix, Your the man!!!:beer :beer

It has been hinted at before... but I think you should ask the $ amount for a NOS replacement.

If the transport company is responsible for the damage, you need to find out what their liability is.

Normally the $$$ goes to the person who paid for the shipping (ie the EBAY seller) not the recipient.
