Ok, so last fall at the drag strip I was running in the 108 MPH range with my trap speeds running 93 Sunoco fuel. Both of the stations in my town closed this past march. In the spring I ran the car and only got 103 MPH. I figured old, Sunoco Fuel w/stabil just was not cutting it. So I used come BP for a while to get the car used to it. Ran again this summer and got 103 MPH. Hmm....so I switched to Exxon which is "supposedly" Top Tier fuel and today I managed to 99-101 MPH.
Last fall I did not have any wheel spin with crappy 60 foots, today I had NO will spin with much better 60 foots. Practice is a good thing, so that takes that out of the equation. As I recall last fall the car pulled noticeably harder on the top end of the track and at higher RPMs. Conditions when I have ran today where similar to last fall, both other times this year where a little warmer but not much. Coolant temps seem to make no difference as I note these and write them down on every pass. Hot or cooler same trap speeds.
Now the BP and Exxon stations probaly do NOT go through much 92/93 Octane so....that being said, maybe I should switch back to crappy Sheetz gas because maybe it is fresher. I had 105MPH traps in the heat of the summer of 2010 with Sheetz has. 92 Octane is what it is rated as.
The only other gas stations in my area are Keystone-gasoline quality unknown, and Kwik Fill same as Sheetz.
There is a Sunoco station 13 miles away in area I rarely go. Who knows if anyone uses the High test stuff there???
My question is what to do about this. I suspect I am getting spark knock and I am getting the timing pulled out and it is killing my HP. I don't have a "tuning and data logging equipment" but I do have a scan tool with a record function. Might be hard to use at the strip however.
I do not like the idea of using Octane Boosters they have some not so good side effects. What to do, go back to Sheetz gas???
On the positive side my Corvette and I are VERY consistent. From 8 passes I got anywhere from a 13.72 to 13.63. That is a deviation of only .09!!!! 60 foots improved from 2.13-2.04. Very smooth 5K launches with NO wheel spin, only slipped clutch for maybe 30 ft TOPS. I'm not really sure how much happens really fast, obviously. Heck, when I actually paid attention to the light the one run, I got a .0414. My previous best is a 13.50 at 103.3MPH w/2.12 60 foot. If I get the 2.04 60 foot with the 108 trap=ET in the 13.3-13.2 range is VERY likely. So you can see why I want my HP back. FYI, I have a total of 25 passes on the car, I think I'm doing ok, but I want to do better the car has it, we just need to find it.
The only other idea I had is 18 year old valve springs+lots of WOT operation since my purchase of the car=weak valve springs=poor top end.
Any ideas.....
