hi there all,

i have a problem with my 1991 turn signal stork!
the plastic bracket/pivot with the pins has snapped and worn out on the steering colum!

and now i can not use the turn signal now.

how do i go about pulling it all apart to replace it with a new stork/bracket/pivot- pins?

how much roughly for a new stork?

is it a hard job too do and replace it?

how long to do it also?

will the air bag delpoy at all as i am working near it?

has any one else had this problem at all with this situation?

hope so one can please guide me with what and how to fix it!
thanks guys

I don't have a manual for a 91. Can you get on eBay and purchase a factory service manual from HELMS get the two book RED one. The white manuals were the interim versions and don't have all of the repair procedures.

Mike

Get a manual, it'll help. I believe there is a "special tool" that you'll need but only about 50 bucks or so. (much cheaper than paying someone else) All in all, not a terribly difficult job. Pull the fuse on the air bag and disconnect the battery. Good luck.

I did it on my 84. With the exception of the air bag, I do not think that will be much different for you.

You need a couple of puller. One for the wheel and the other one for the lock retainer snap ring. If you have tilt steering, as my 84, the puller comes with a threaded pin that you use to simulate the tilt locking mecanism.

I just remove the wheel and all the bolts I see one by one until I get to the switch. Then I remove the switch. You disconnect it from the bottom of the steering column. You can pull the connector and harness by the top of the column steering. Then you insert the new connector and harness in the steering column until you can see it at the bottom.

It might take a couples of hours if you take your time. Nice job to do well sit in the driver seat.... I would wait 15-30 minutes after the battery has been disconnected for the air bag.

I found the switch on the http://www.corvettecentral.com/ part number 594341 for $44.10.

Good Luck

hi vette 747,
thanks for the info and link!
i only need to replce the plastic pivot where the indicator stork and pin bolts on too!
the pin has come out and the pivot/bracket is brocken and worn now!
can i just re-place the pivot/stork bracket or do i have to but the whole assembly now?
thanks

I'm sorry - I just can't sit by on this one...

It's STALK, not STORK! :)

stork, stock, tomato, to-mah-to, it's pretty clear what he meant to say.

I did it several years ago. If I recall correctly there are 2-3 bolts that holds the pivot to the switch. There is also a wire at the end of the stalk for the cruse control that goes into the steering column. You just need the two pullers and some time.

You have to wait ten minutes for a 93 or earlier airbag system 2 minutes with a 94 or later. However, there are still a couple of other airbag safety procedures listed in the manual.

I suggest once again buy one! Deploying the Airbag accidentally will cost more than the price of the manual, and thats if you don't get hurt.

Not STORK not STALK it's a multifunction turn signal lever!

Glen I still have your email address and tomorrow I will scan the section from my 1995 manual and send it to you. I figure since they mention the 1993 and down procedure in my manual that it should work on your car and I don't want you to have the airbag blow in your face. (That would suck) However, your going to need a manual sooner or later to keep that car running in OZ.

I agree. The manual is a must to do some mechanic on these cars.

Glen, you have mail. Good luck, with what seems to be an easy repair!

No problem, don't forget to post when you get it fixed. I hate threads with no status on the outcome!
