Hurst linkage 1969 350/300HP

I have purchased the linkage replacement kit and am ready to start taking apart.

My only problem is, I am not sure how the small tool that comes with it is used for spacing. Looking at it from under neath is a little tricky.

Any help in ow best to proceed?

L shaped piece of 1/4" plastic? Used to locate neutral- fits into hole in the shift base where the "gates or linkage arms are" adjust the rods with it in neutral and pin in.
