I am looking for a good paint job on a tight budget.

I went with the DuPont system, base coat/clear coat, because GM shoots all Vettes using Dupont. Why re-invent the wheel.

Read all you can get your hands on first. EXACTLY follow the directions on both the materials and the gun. I used a HVLP to minimize over-spray and save materials.

What kind of costs dod you have for equipment? Did you hand sand or get a grinder?

My 89's in need of paint, and I'd like to paint it a similar shade to what it is now (Midnight Blue Metallic). I saw a 2002 Ferarri with a similarbut much cooler paintjob.

My concern is the cracking I can see in the fibreglass behind the tonneau. Does anybody know how to fix or repair that so that it doesn't return after I paint?

onlyproblem about maaco is if you have to ever repaint the car it will cost you twice as much. i was told they use acrylic paint and that needs to be stripped down bare and repainted.

a professional paint job is ALOT of work. alot of sanding looking priming sanding looking priming. atleast a good shop will do this so everything is straight and no dings (in metal cars) so when the paint does go on it looks good and not like a maaco job. maaco usually won't do body work and rarely will do a quality job on tape work.

as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for"

sometimes they look good sometimes they don't. i think a paintjob if your going to do it is well worth the money like rebuilding your motor.

The HVLP gun cost about $90.00. I could have borrowed a buddy's Binks gun, but I wanted to minimize over-spray. I used the same gun to paint the bike, so it's paid for itself.

I hand sanded everything, but I do have a Craftsman buffer that I used for the final polishing with a lamb's wool pad - I used McGuires polishing liquid (fogot the # on the bottle).
