I feel at home already

Hi guys 'n' gals,

Thanks for making a foreigner so welcome. I'm really pleased to have found this community, and I'm settling in nicely. I'm sure that over the two years between now and when I come to get my vette, I'll manage to paint a great picture of what I need to look out for.

A lot of my postings may well be quite generic, as I haven't ever actually owned a Corvette, but I hope that I can chip in with useful stuff on occasion.

Many people here in NZ tell me that my English sense of humor is a bit odd. Feel free to tell me to shut up if I start free-running.

P.S. Is there a term used for a Corvette enthusiast? I mean, along the lines that Ferrari enthusiasts are called Tifosi.

I read your other post in planning to buy a Vette' in 2 years. I think a lot can change in 2 years. Your taste and budget (hopefully, it'll go up) will probably change.

Maybe you'll want a C5 in a few years.

Ah yes! You've caught me deliberately using US spelling and words. A mark of respect. I should have said "petrol" too!

You probably noticed that I'm limited by NZ import laws to a car that is over 20 years of age, hence a 1987MY in late 2006. If it all goes well (and in fact happens) then I'd like to make it a regular "pilgrimage".

Rotors, mufflers, hoods, trunks, oil pans, tires, lug nuts, breaker bars, rocker panels, gas tanks, windshields, bushings, liters, sedans, station wagons....

Or is that brake disks, exhaust silencers, bonnets, boots, sumps, tyres, wheel nuts, tommy bars, sills, petrol tanks, windscreens, bushes, litres, saloons, estates....?

A new one for you? I'm pretty sure it's what you would call a breaker bar - a rod that you put through a hole in a wrench handle to get extra leverage.

Origin - who knows, except that English soldiers have been called Tommies for decades. Maybe some connection.

Basicly the same thing, just a piece of pipe put over the end of a wratchet or wrench. Actually I think a breaker bar is really a swivel handled head that has a socket adapter on the end and is solid vs. a wratchet end. I could post a pic if you like. Be a couple days.

Ah I see. If I wanted an English friend to pass me one of those, I'd say:

"Could you please pass me a piece of pipe to put over the end of this wrench?"

I don't think that there is a specific name for an item to do this, in England. I think I would just call it "an extension".

A "breaker bar" is just a long-handled socket wrench, that is, it's the ratchet head without any ratcheting involved - just leverage. :L
