Well today I replaced my gas tank and painted the rear of the frame.I removed the tank and was cleaning the over spray from when the car when the previous owner painted it red and I found this number in wax or grease pen,It look like a number 104 As your look from the rear of the car foward it was on the right side of the rear bulk head.

Hi!
I believe it was a production control sequence number. 1 to 500 and then they would start again. I found a set of numbers on my 65 on the right firewall and on rear tub. The two set of numbers were the same.

Yup, it's the Body Shop Job Number - you'll find the same one on the engine side of the passenger side toe pan.

An abbreviated version is also located on the top of the firewall, under the bonded front end, up against the windshield. Of course, you will never see this one unless you remove the front clip, which I did. My number on the bottom firewall and the rear bulkhead is #294. :D

Those were the days, when our cars were ¨laid up by hand¨, back then Detroit was politically incorrect. TheVettes were laid up by men while the seats and interior were sewn by women.

GM being cheep put the entire assembly under one roof.

If the chicks stitching the seats wore jeans too tight or skirts too short, remember mini-skirts, the guys pouring on the polyester were likely to leave some curves in the glass similar to the curves they were staring at. At the same time the chicks stitching the seats were giggling about the tight a$$es on the body builders and missed a few stitches.

This caused the General to require each molding to be signed off with a code that would match it up the interior made on the same day.

This primitive form of QC assured us that our Vetts with lumpy floor pans would also have mis-stiches in the seats.

Mine is white too. You must have meant Patrick's photo.

Here's the driver's door inside the door panel. Passenger is the same.

Yep, same 500 as the bulkhead.

I'm unsure of what the E stands for but I'll bet JohnZ knows. :D

The paint stick numbers (294) on the front and rear of the bulkhead and the floorpan are white; however the abbreviated number (94) up next to the drivers wiper is in black, obviously for a reason. It was probably a different QA check by a different crew chief on the line. :D
