I agree with lnirenberg, I would start by doing photoshop renderings over a photograph, to try all the ideas quickly. If you cant use photoshop, Im sure someone you know can, as quite common now.
Then once, say two scheme prefferred/selected, transffer to a large model, each side with a seperate scheme. This is good to get the 3D perspective of the scheme to the lines on the car, and viewing from several perspectives.
My wife and I do design for a living (she's the photoshop wiz), and this is still how we approached this on the last car that we built/modded.
This is a small investment to makie sure you've got it right! before spending the big money, also the painter found the model an invaluable tool when masking out etc. Just my $0.02 worth!
