Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

I wonder how well it would hold up on the street?

1984-96 Lexan Rear Hatch Window

  • Saves 32 Lbs. (Stock 47/Lexan 15)
  • Direct Fit
  • For Racing Only
  • Lexan Has MR2 Hardcoat To Help Prevent Scratching

If a good fairy gives me some money ($449.99 + S&H :eyerole), I was thinking of going even lighter and was eyeballing these - only fifteen pounds! What do ya think? ;)

I think it would be great if you kept it out of the sun. Doesn't Lexan, though strong, show that funny looking cracking after extended time in the sun?

It also scratches if you look at it funny (odd for something so strong). Amtrak was replacing windows in its dome cars with lexan for a while, but found they got sandblasted to the point of opacity fairly quickly. Now they use a safety glass of some sort.

Lexan *IS* strong... someone once dropped a tie plate (used to hold a rail to a tie, weighs about 25 lbs I think) off a bridge onto the dome car I was riding in. The plate BOUNCED off the Lexan (scratching it, of course) and proceeded to dent the metal roof of the car. I saw the window flex...

Thanks for the first-hand experience feedback, Rich. :upthumbs

Lexan is what a majority of aircraft have for windows. Never clean with amonia based products or wipe with a paper towel. Permatex makes a kick azz cleaner for this and cheese cloth works good as a polishing rag.The stuff just has to be treated right. Also fairly flamable, thus not DOT aproved last I knew for auto use(Take and landing speeds) are higher in your car that lots of small aircraft,so go figure
