Some of you remember the thread back in January that bobchad done on his header and exhaust project on his car. After talking with him on the board and extensively studiing his website, I ordered the same dynomax cermaic coated headers.
I added the true dual chambered exhaust from mid america with 2.5 pipes.

I did not get to start this project until last sunday night, I received motivation from a corvette club meeting sat. night. A C5 was reving his pipes outside the restaurant as the meeting broke up. He has the borla setup, it sounds good for a new car, but you know. So sun. afternoon I started pulling the manifolds off and made good use of my sawzall, rather than fight with the rusted frozen studs, where the pipes connected. I have worked on it every night after work and last night (thurs) I finally got to start it up with the new exhaust and it sounds very (CORVETTE) if you know what I mean.

If the C5 guy does this at the next meet I intend to give him an answer. I know he is extremely faster, but nothing sounds better than a carbureted 350 with headers and chambered exhaust. All I have left to do is a test drive and then install my bolt locks on the new fasteners and add some chrome tips. (As a side note I have a 94 z 28 with the hooker aerochamber cat back and it sound better than the ls-1 as well; but that's my opinion.

While we can't deny that the LS1 family of engines run very strong, in my opinion their exhaust sounds terrible. Sounds more "importish" to me . I think that it is because they changed to a diffrent firing order instead of the traditional chevrolet V-8 18436572. Anyway some of us can't outrun them but we can sound like we can.

I whole heartedly agree on the sound, and you're correct about the changed firing order. I don't recall why the change was required, but I noticed it does two things, first as you already stated it gives the LS1 and LS6 a "different note" and another thing it does is it creates a weird side to side shuffle from the LS6 cam when idling. Instead of the usual rocking and ...rump.. rump.. sound from a high lift cam, it kinda shuffles side to side when at a traffic light. The idle sound is barely noticeable compared to other muscle cars, you have to be outside near the exhaust tips to actually hear it.
But.... and this is where the real fun begins, when ya get on it, there's not much around that will hang without some serious engine mods.
Oh and from what I have heard so far, aftermarket exhaust systems on the C5s don't seem to sound better, just louder.

Like I say , they run very, very good , just have a diffrent note to them than the older V-8's. My wife has an 02 Tahoe with the 5.3 vortec & with the factory exhaust at idle it sounds kind of weird. It's in perfect tune but some exhaust pulses sound louder than others. Anyway for a 5000lb tank it runs real good. It would come close to beating the Vette before I started modding it! Could probobly take it out & make some money off of some Honda's with it. Extra income to make that payment with.

Have a good one!

hello, sometimes just listening to a good sounding car is enough to slow down your competition. ya' know if it sounds BAD, it must be really BAD!

I appreciate your efforts, bobchad and you have a well designed website.

I had my '82 on-display this past weekend, and all the C5s sound the 'same'; like import trash.....
Even a stock '82 C.E., with 'just' 2.5" straight-pipes & mufflers 'sounded' better!
