iam new to the forum and this is my first vette 1981 there are a few minor issues one being the idle stop selonoid the car sometimes experences desiling when i turn the engine off the plunger on the selonoid can be moved freely in and out by hand also there is no power to the selonoid the previous owner gave me the shop manual but that is driving me crazy can anybody out there in the world of the corvette help me trace the circuit to the selonoid so i ca get it operational thanks jimbodiecast

Not sure about 81s but on 78/79s the solenoid on the driver side of the carb is only for the AC. When you turn the air on the idle kicks up a little. Is there a green wire going to it?

When the engine is off you will be able to move it freely. As mentioned above, the solenoid is only used and energized when the AC is turned on. This is not the cause of your "deiseling".

thanks for the reply yes there is a green wire going to it i was cheching other posts and one fellow wa directed to a web site with wiring diagrams for every year corvette your correct that it only works with the a/c on should the plunger on the selonoid extend and retract with no ower to it i can do this by hand or does the plunger have tension on it only when it becomes energized ive been working crazy hours have to work sunday any input would be appreciated thanks jim

If memory serves, the AC compressor will cycle about 3 seconds when the ignition is turned off to help with the dieseling. The solenoid activates during this time to close the carb.

You can check solenoid operation by having someone turn the ignition off while you watch the solenoid.

:)

An electrically operated plunger in a carburetor that provides a predetermined throttle setting at idle and closes the throttle completely when the ignition switch is turned off. Also known as antidieseling solenoid.

Mike, you are absolutely correct.

I'm trying to remember, but I think this was adjustable, by using a wrench to adjust the length of the shaft of the solenoid? Any one else remember?

i dont think it is adjustable the head of the plungger happens to be in the shape of a hex head nut thanks aot guys for your input you really helped the selonoid works as you described i was about to spend 50.00 on a new one

It is adjustable. Simply turn the hex head with a wrench to move in or out. Easier to do with the engine turned off.
