I have a 1988 vette and try to do all my own maintenance if possible. I just experienced failure of the passenger side headlight in going up, I learned that the three plastic bushings in the gear housing disintegrate with age. A replacement rebuilt headlight motor unit is around $160.00, however the three bushings are $5.00 a set. I went to corvettefever.com their "how to" section provides step by step illustrated instructions for replacing the bushings. The instructions are excellent, I strongly recommend home mechanics follow their advice carefully. It took me about four hours to rebuild both headlight units for a total cost of $17.00 including shipping. I purchased the bushings from ZIP.corvette.
