I am getting ready to do a tune up on my 93. I am planning on upgrading to Bosch Platinum +4 plugs and Bosch wires, and was considering adding a MSD-6AL ignition and upgrading the starter. I have a few questions before going through with this.

Right now I don't have many upgrades, just Borla Cat-Back exhaust, but am planning on some more exhaust/intake upgrades along with fuel system upgrades, but figured I'd try to accomplish the ignition system first, is this a good idea or does it matter?

What would be the benefits/downfalls of adding the ignition?

Any recomendations for the starter?

Does anyone have any other recomendations for ignition set ups?

I can tell you alot about an '84 vette. But probably differnt than yours.

The stock HEI ignition should serve you just fine until you exceed 7000 rpm or so, and/or put on some sort of a blower.

Is your starter not doing the job?

Also, most mechanics prefer GM plugs in a GM engine, etc. I suggest you search the site for more feedback on the Bosch wires and plugs, but doubt you'll see more bang for your buck over replacement Delcos. They're not the cheapo stuff they used to be, and no, I never worked for any division of GM.

I have spent bucks on 'better' aftermarket wires and plugs; sold my MSD. My 406 sports Delco plugs and wires.

Good for you asking B4 spending!

Sorry for the delay Ace, I have been so busy working overtime, haven't had time for much else! I haven't done anything yet, I think I'm going to stick to plugs and wires for now, Whale has me thinking again about what kind to go with. Sounds like I should explore my options. As for my reasons, I have had a rough idle now for a while and with colder weather here, occasionally I have to crank it a while before it'll start, but I don't think it's the battery, I constantly have 14.4v, so I have decided to go with changing the plugs and I figured while I was at it, to add an Ignition, but I think I'll hold off on that for now. So that's where I stand now...

Look at the plugs for clues as to what is okay and what is not. They should be light brown, not black, wet nor crusty, and the electrodes should look similar to new plugs, in shape and size.

Plug life is fantastic, compared to the old days, but their color and condition really tells the story. You might consider making a small board with holes for them, numbered 1-8. As you pull them, put 'em in the board and take it to a good mechanic for analysis. Also, old Motor manuals have a photo section which helps one 'read' plugs.

A freebie, is to unplug the ECM for >10 seconds, to reset it. I have fixed problems when I made it forget bad memories. It is likely an orange wire, attached to the + battery wire, with a disconnect in it, and nearby.

Always good to ask questions and think before throwing dough. I learned the pricey way.
