Independent or dealer body shop?

I need to have the driver's door on my '01 replaced (broken by the hinge). It will require the door being painted as well as it being blended to the front and rear quarter panels (so the dealer body shop manager said). Is there a generality that can be made as to who does better body work? The dealer or an independent? The independent I'm considering using has a great, great reputation (pricey as heck) - I'm not sure of the dealer's body shop. Also, should I be asking any specific questions to determine their expertise, etc?
