Indicator light for automatic transmission

My 2001 automatic does not have a light indicating the position of the transmission. No problem during the day, can be confusing at night.

Should there be a light indicator and if so, how do you replace?

On my '04 there is a red indicator tab that moves with the shifter from the park, reverse, netural, drive. It is red and covers the white back ground as the shifter moves through the pattern. No light that I can tell other than the under mirror light.
