Hello. We are looking to purchase a 1986 Corvette. I had the rpo code list from Corvette story site and the glove box had one that threw me off. Z52 was listed instead of Z51. I was under the impression the Z52 option was only available in 87&88. It has the early 86 iron heads(no center valve cover bolts) and also the color code shows upper/lower 8554. Can anyone help me out here and is there a way to get the original rpo's from the VIN? Thanks

Is there a way to get the RPO from the VIN? Yes, contact the NCM and buy the build sheet and original window sticker. Other than that, I can't help you.

3 to 4 weeks to get that and we are looking to buy within a week. I am just afraid I might be looking a some kinf of Frankenstein car with different year parts unless some 86 vettes had the Z52.

My brothers 87 convertible has the Z52 option. According to our database it was only available for the coupe? I know it has the Z52 though, because I purchased a build sheet and window sticker for his birthday last year, and yep it was listed.

How many miles are on this car? I personally wouldn't worry about a car that was cobbled together. Is it possible it left the factory outfitted with Z52? I would say maybe but I just can't confirm that.

Just getting a Z52 code in a 1986 vinned car worries me.

Is there a VIN on the RPO code list in the glove box? If so, did you match it to another VIN somewhere else on the car? I'm not sure how many locations an 86 had, but most cars have a VIN in more than one spot.

... glove box ...

Glove box? You mean center console cover/armrest?

That's a high-wear item. Might have been replaced. With a non-rpo for that year, my cash is on a part swap.

Bingo! It was a console/arm rest swap. I found the other rpo listing in the storage compartment with a matching vin. It is a Z51 car.

Sweet!!!!!!!!:)

My wife is mulling over the thought of driving the 4+3. It was fun for me.

If she has ever driven a stick it won't be a problem. My wife hadn't driven a stick in over 25 yrs when we got our 90 with six speed. By the third time starting from a stop she was back in the swing of it. Have a hard time keeping her out of the corvette now.

AS an owner of an 86 with a 4+3 be wary!, you didnt say how many miles, make sure if there are no problems with the 4+3, if there are any miles over 30k, run the car get it heated up, listen for noise in reverse or problems going into second gear or popping out of 2nd, the overdrive had inherent problems, if it hasnt been rebuilt then you are destined for costly rebuild/repair. Ask anyone on the forum! it does not matter if the OD is engaged or not, eventually you will lose reverse (it is happeneing to me)
Dont get me wrong, my 86 is great, I love driving it and working on it but I have to let you know that the 4+3 can have major problems.

We are buying an 86 with an automatic tomorrow. The 4+3 is a bit scary with the upkeep.
