Is there any way to tes, with out removing the dash, to see if the circuit card behind the Tack is the problem with a inop Tack?

If you have dwell tach you can hook it up to the tach filter on the engine side. Most likely it is the tach board they tend to go south.

I agree, most likely the tach board. Mine went out, replaced it. The old one had a small burnt speck on the board. It's a pretty big job to pull the tach, replacing the board is not that big of a job to do. good luck.

Thanks, I think it will have to wait until the next scheduled dash removal.

how can i test my tach? i have a 76 coupe and the dash is out of it.i'd lik to know if it works before i put it all back together, the dash was out when i bought the car.thanks----john

John thats a good question all I can say is start the car but may be some of these smart guys will have better suggestion. When I had my dash out I started the car to make sure everything worked, lights, tack, etc before I did the final install.

If the car is able to run just connect the tach connector and the ground at the bottom of the tach housing. Start the engine and take a peek.
