Ahhhh!!!!!! sweet success at last!!! I just managed to install the grant quick disconnect steering wheel on my 2003 vette. Now I can put on any grant steering wheel I feel like. When I leave the car I take the steering wheel with me as another theft deterrant.
I had posted a question about removal of stock steering wheel, and a special tool that the manual refers to as a steering column lock pin. I found out that no you do not need a lock pin. You can just hold the wheel still with youre knees as you unbolt the nut, and also use the steering wheel puller. Grant does not specificaly make an installation kit for any cars with air bags, but I found out that the GM kits all contain the parts you need. You need to use a steering wheel puller with "pry bar type legs, as there are no bolt holes for steering wheel puller bolts to bolt into. The one I had the legs were too wide, and I had to swithch the direction of them and hook them to the outer edges of the steering wheel hub. The stock steering wheel was on there good and tight, and when it came loose it came off rather violently breaking the plastic backing of the steering wheel. I left the sir coil in there, because I did not want to fuss with tearing further into the column than I had to. I did have to trim a piece of the plastic off the sir coil, but left the wire intact. I installed the grant quick disconnect device and had to trim some of the plastic from the steering column trim so the new system would not rub againts the trim. I also had a heck of a time tearing out the passenger side air bag. You need to pretty much remove all of the console and dash trim panels to get it out of there. Now all I need to do is figure some way to fill that empty sspace and cover it with the original air bag cover and make it look pretty again.(maybe some old gym socks will do the trick) Maybe next week end I will pull the instrument cluster and remove the sir system idiot lamp.

to fill the passenger air bag space you need to dig deeper and install a slide out laptop rack, that way you can control the computers through the cockpit on the go,(i.e. switch the air fuel ratios on the go so you can change it for crusing and racing(street) ) then have the cover fold donw and slide in when the lap top is out

got any pictures of the after you switched the wheel

I wish I had a digital camera, maybe I will borrow one from some one at work. I have 2 grant wheels, the leather 3 spoke signature series and also the challenger series. The signature series still has a fire bird emblem on it. will need to look into getting a corvette logo horn button for it.

:eek You removed the airbags? I take it you only use your Vette on the track.

:CRASH Yeah, I removed them. Never had much use for them. I dont trust them. At all. Besides the air bag steering wheels look like garbage. I dont race, I just enjoy driving my vette, and like to have it meet my particular likes and dis likes. I like the freedom of not worrying if the air bags will go off if I hit something, or when ever I am working on my car that maybe I might accidentaly damage a sir wire or circuit, and cause a potential relaese of air bag. Yes you can dis connect the battery while working on the car, but eventualy you will hook the battery back up, and any damage you may have caused to the sir wires or components may cause a potential release of air bag. The service manual is chock full of warnings about the sensitivity of the sir system, and even minor damage to components poses an uncertain risk.I have a lot of projects planned where I would be working in or around these very sensitive components. I would have left the passenger air bag alone but was not sure how my removal of the drivers side bag would affect the sir system. better to be safe than sorry, and just remove it. Anyway I do use seat belts, and also do not drive like a maniac like I did when I was younger.
I dont ever plan on selling this car. I plan on driving it for at least 12 years and maybe much much longer, and get my moneys worth out of it, so I am not worried that the value will be lower or some one may not want it.
It would be nice if the MFR would offer to not have them installed instead of forcing them on the customer. But they are only following the law.

if you or someone has 4 or 5 point harnesses then I could see you not need the airbag but unless you do airbags are still there for good reasons.
