so through the act of discovery this past weekend, i noticed that my stock cast intake manifold has rusted through and is weeping antifreeze. since the car will probably never be ncrs, what has been the favorite aftermarket intake manifold used out there? i am leaning toward an edelbrock aluminum.

thoughts and comments please.

thanks

Edelbrock Performer has been one of them because it comes with and without the EGR fitting and goes under the stock hood with no mods.

The Performer RPM has also been popular but requires modification to the air cleaner and/or the hood to get it to fit.

intake manifold has rusted through
Wow, I have never seent that! If the intake is rusted through then I would really really really be concerned about the frame and birdcage, they are probably gone by now.

tom...

yakatak76, are you sure that it is the itnake that has rusted through? Because my intake is also leaking (weeping) antifreeze through the whole front, and I think that it's just the gasket that I have to change. Maybe that's the same in your case? Just an idea... :)

stallion,

i thought that too, but i just replaced gasket and haven't run the engine yet. i am going to dab up the antifreeze again tonight and spray a little talcom powder around it to see if i can see a trail from the thermostat housing. i would much rather replace the gasket again as opposed to the whole intake manifold.

The waterneck gasket (where the thermostat is) was one of the two things that I first thought of when I found out that I was leaking anti-freeze. But, like I said, it turned out that the trail wasn't coming from the waterneck, but from the seal around the intake. Any pictures of your leak? Maybe us CACers can help out with the diagnostics. :)

stallion,

i don't have photos, still in the dark ages when it comes to computer technology. i will check in the area that you are mentioning, and see if that is the problem. i guess if that is leaking than i would still be in the same boat of having to take the intake off and fixing the gasket. i guess this is why they call it a hobby car.

thanks for the thoughts....

looked at the manifold again last night and once i cleaned away the painted over dirt that i thought was corroding metal discovered that the manifold is ok. since i have only had the car for 6 weeks, i hadn't made the rounds on tightening the hose clamps but did do that last night and found that they were any where from not tight at all to almost tight. seems the mechanic for the car owner before me liked to leave things loose so that he could get the guy to bring the car in more often, judging by the number of receipts i got with the car when i bought it. also, i have a small seep from the edges of the manifold as described by stallion, (thanks for the hint), so i think i will go through and re-torque the bolts to make sure they are to spec and maybe that will stop the seep. anyway, things are looking better.

Yes, first would be to make sure that all intake bolts are torqued to spec. If not, then that would definitely cause a leak. If the bolt(s) is/are loose, then you should consider putting some thread sealant (sp?) in just so you won't need to revisit this problem in the near future.

Good luck with everything!! :)

Probably not rusted through. But if leak persists post retorque, probably need to remove intake, clean up the gasket surfaces and replace gaskets. If you do not use egr valve on your year ... most popular intakes that always fit stock carb, air cleaner & low hood are edelbrock performer pn 2101 and weiand action plus pn 8004 ... both are cast aluminum, low-rise, dual-plane and have carb mount pad drilled for both spreadbore (qjet) and squarebore (holley) patterns.
