Does anyone have direct experience using interior dye? I have an '89 coupe and want to do an interior color change from red to black. If I dye the door panels and the console sides, for instance, does the dye rub off easily? Any other tips? I already have new black seat covers and black seat belts. TIA for anyone who knows how to use dye.

Well, I re-dyed all of my plastic interior pieces in the CE last spring. I used a spray gun with my compressor and I think it came out real well. Shouldn't be a problem going from red to black. The most important thing is the preparation. Make sure you clean everything real well with laquer thinner and then don't touch it. Use light spray coats and all should be OK>

dyeing my carpets

Any ideas how I go about this? What to use?

I use alot of this vinyl dye and it works but the carpet is a different story. The carpet is best done with a dye that is found at walmart .It is a water based dye and it doesnt leave it stiff like the other dye

I redyed most of my 69 interior pieces, gunmetal, and I used an airbrush. A nice fine mist was all that was needed. I do however disagree with the previous post about using laquer thinner. The thinner if left on too long will soften and possibly ruin the plastic pieces. I used ammonia and water and then wax and grease remover. As for durability, it will last as long as you are careful, plus you have a quart of backup to respray!!!

I just checked out this product on the Zip website and am very interested in changing my light saddle interior to black. How would I go about doing everything in the interior? Does this stuff come off easily if I were to get it on the windows by mistake?? How many cans would I need also?

Thanks!

I just used some ammonia and a scotchbrite pad (red). Bought the dye from corvette central, never had any problems 3 years.

:cool I just ordered 2 cans and going to try it. Does anyone have any before and after pics of their interior?

Can you believe I'm visiting this question again after almost an entire year? I totally forgot that I asked this.

Well, if anyone is interested, I bought the interior "dye" and the vinyl prep from Mid America and pulled the original red door panels and console sides and painted them black. What a difference, they look like new. I can't be more pleased with the appearance or the ease of use. The dye is very durable, I have had it on my car for eight months now and it shows no signs of the wearing or cracking that you might expect. Must be some kind of special formula.

Anyway, the secret is to clean clean clean the parts before painting, you cannot get them too clean. I brought my door panels into the shower with me and scrubbed them down really good, removing years of oils, armor-all, and dirt. After drying, I painted them with two coats, let them dry for a day, and voila, they looked like new. It's cheaper than spending $500 on new ones. Together with my new black carpet that I bought on Ebay, I now have a new black interior.

BTW, two cans was enough for me to do the console sides and the door panels with two coats. For a full interior, you might consider three or four cans. Better too much than too little, after all. Also, I did not use primer.
