After I start my car and I have run it for a few minutes the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on briefle then goes out and comes on again. During this period I sometimes notice slight rough running (if I use too much gas).

After a couple of minutes the light goes out and doesn't reappear until I start the car again (didn't reappear at all on a 250 mile drive a couple of days ago).

When I check the codes I get a code 43 which is an Electronic Spark Control code. According to the manuals I have this means the knock sensor or ESC module. Anyone know if a 1990 has an ESC module. I remeber seeing one on my 84 and 93 but I can't see one on my car. It's usually near the washer bottle on the passenger side.

Because the light goes out and the car drives perfectly after this I wonder if I have a problem or not. Anyone else experienced this or got any ideas?

I have a 1990 6-speed (Callaway, though I don't suppose that makes any difference to the problem)

Thanks folks, Malc.

I have a 93 that had the same problem. The ESC sends a single signal to the knock sensor about 30 seconds after start up. If it gets a reply the system assumes all is well. If not you get the code. So I got under the car and checked the wire connection on the knock sensor(s) in my case there is one one each side. Just wiggled it around. Cleared the code and it has been running fine ever since. Allways go for the easiest fix.
