Hi all. ;help

I'm experiencing intermittent problems with my right front tire sensor and key fob. At times all tire pressure monitor sensors register on the DIC as normal, then I'll get the Sevice TM Soon message and notice that the RF pressure isn't being displayed. Sometimes it is blank and other times it shows XXX. At the same time, I've begun having problems with my key fob. The sensor will fail to recognize my key fob command to lock/unlock the doors or open the trunk. I have gone by the dealership and let them test my fob battery but it is fine. I have tried reprogramming the key fob - sometimes it "learns" the fob, and other times it doesn't no matter how long I sit and hold the buttons. Even after it "learns" the fob, the next time I try to use it, chances are very good it won't work again.

Today the mystery deepened further. I was around my car for several minutes while at the shop for an alignment, and the locks cycled and the horn sounded several different times although I had the PASSIVE button on the fob turned off. The next time I tried to use the key fob to unlock the doors, nothing. Then when I arrived home, I tried it again and it locked the doors and the horn sounded.

I'm unfamiliar with the module involved, but someone else told me that the Tire Pressure Monitor sensor and the Door Locks are all on the same module or some such.

Is this true? Does it sound as though I need to replace the tire sensor, or the module, or both? I've done some research here but couldn't find any info quite like the issue I'm having. I would appreciate suggestions or input from others more knowledgeable than I am. I'm going to end up taking it to the dealership I'm sure, and I don't know anyone personally in the service department that I can count on.

As a sidebar to this issue: I hit a very nasty pothole last week with the right front tire. It wasn't clearly marked and I didn't see it until I'd already hit it. It had to have rattled my car pretty bad because it sure rattled my teeth! I had the car in today for a fuel filter replacement and asked my mechanic to take a look at the right front tire and wheel but he couldn't see any obvious damage. I only mention it because the sensor issues began soon after this incident. As to whether or not the two are related, I don't know. ;shrug

Thanks for any help or suggestions y'all can offer.

Jane Ann,

Both of your issues are nealry identical to the ones that came up within the first month after I got my 98.

The tire sensor was doing the same thing, sometime XXX, sometimes blank. It was in the process of dying and eventually it was all XXX all the time. As it happens, I got new sensors yesterday.

C4C5Specialist helped with my fob issue at CruiseFest. I had reset and reprogrammed 3 or 4 times at home. Again, exactly like yours - passive turned off and it started sporadically working as if passive was on and would only work when I pushed the buttons if it felt like it. You guessed it, the fob is bad but not completely. Paul reset everything, switched my fob to passive on and it works perfectly but only in passive mode. He said that if I wanted passive off it was time for a new fob. The passive off option doesn't work any longer. Kelly's remote works fine in either mode so it's definitely the fob. I picked up Kelly's remote off of ebay for $40.

Try reprogramming and switch to passive and see what happens.

Love those little gremlins:mad .

Good luck!

Thanks Eric. I'll try as you suggested, and start an eBay search for a replacement. As for the sensor - are they very expensive? And just exactly where are they located? Inside the tire? Or the stem? Needless to say, I'm not familiar with them at all. ;shrug

HI there, Jane,
Yes, both tire pressure monitoring and the keyless entry are on the same system and control module.
The sensors are actually integrated with the tire valve stem and are all one piece.
Yours will probably need to be replaced. Sometimes, it is the contacts inside the sensor that just stops working. You will have to remove the tire to exchange the sensor.
As for the transmitter, the passive switch sometimes will NOT shut off, so the receiver will become confused. You can program 2000 transmitters that do NOT have the passive function to alleviate this condition.
Allthebest, c4c5

Thank you

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info... hope you've been well since we met at Cruisefest!

I've got some time off coming next week and I'll likely tackle these issues then. As I mentioned, I had the fuel filter replaced Friday as per your suggestion in your seminar.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and expertise!

I have a 2000 Coupe that had to have its wheel sensor re-learned after I had the wheels changed to an after market set. The dealer did that.

After I got the car I had problems where the FOB wouldn't work periodically and it got worse and worse. The 'Vette spent a week at the dealer to figure out if it was the receiver, FOB or Body Control module. The 2000 doesn't have a passive mode, but it turned out that the FOB and the Body Control Module needed to both be replaced.. I bought a FOB off Ebay for a fraction of the Dealer price. I think before you change anything out you should check the Body Control Module codes on your DIC. They are pretty informative and may save you some money if they point you in the right direction. I hope this helps - Ron

Thanks for the information and suggestion, Ron. I'll likely go to a friend's shop (prior to dealer visit) and get him to help me view any codes that are listed to troubleshoot the problem as much as possible before I turn the it over to the dealership.

Thanks again,
:w Jane Ann
