Can an IPod or MP3 be connected to a head unit with a CD jack with good results?

Paul
by CD jack, if you mean an aux line input (RCA-type input connections) than yes it can and it will sound very good.
If it's a multi-pin single connector that is usually proprieitary per manufacturer that goes from the radio to thier brand of CD changer than I don't know if anyone makes any type of adapter cord to hook up an iPod to that or not. There may be but I haven't searched for it to know.

did that answer your question?

Barry,
It's the Custom Autosound head unit that I have (4 x 25W). A miserable contraption with a cassette that continually malfunctions but it is CD-compatible so it must have the right jack or port. The options I am considering are discussed in the link below. As you may know I have considered installing a CD player in the glove box but the MP3/IPod option seems so much simpler. If it works! And with a limited budget that seems like a viable option that might work with the Autosound head. It does have CD input.

I really want to get away from cassettes. They are a pain.

an AUX input is the easiest but chances are the CA radio doesn't have one (but next time you are at the car you may might to check anyway).

I believe most of the CA equipment is Kenwood so it might be possible to see if there is an adapter from Kenwood that converts from the CD changer jack connection to an iPod.

Try to avoid going with the FM modulator option. i'm currently "stuck" with this until I can get my radio rebuilt and i'll have an AUX input wired in and the FM modulators suck. They work OK in more modern cars because practically everything in newer cars are plastic, but all the metal in the dash of our older cars really blocks the FM modulator signal

Barry,
Many thanks for your help. I have the Autosound specs somewhere and will pull out tomorrow. It is not a Kenwood unit. I don't know what it is. Except barely acceptable junk. I thought that I could salvage it with an IPod.

Well;

HOLY CRAP Barry !! Not sure I understood a word you said (wrote) about I-pods but you sure can illuminate me at ANY time !!

I'm sitting here listening to Warren Zevon (Poor Poor Pitiful Me; almost sounds like you with the broken valve cover !) as we speak (write) on the new I-pod Wendy got for me.

This thing is GREAT !!!!!!! I just need someone to show me how to operate this thing to it's fullest potential. Wendy is REAL good at this or tof stuff, but she doesn't deal real well with my "I want it to work NOWW !!! attitude.

you should have said something when you were here earlier.
anytime you want stop by with the iPod and Linda and I can show you how to use it. to be honest, Linda is the TRUE iPOd wiz around here.
I just put music on mine and listen to it, Linda does EVERYTHING with hers - music, calendar, schedules, appointments, memos, transfers driving directions onto it if we go somewhere, etc.

iPods are pretty cool aren't they Larry and Bernie :)

Barry,

Just got mine for Christmas (now listening to early Santana) and want to fool around with it myself, but I'm sure that I DO NOT know how to use this thing to it's fullest potential (not to mention I have a couple of beers in me at this point).

I want to use it in the car (Pont. and Corvette), at the place in PR, at work (if the boss isn't around) and also for pictures etc... The more I read about this thing the more I amazed about it !!

AHHHHH ----- th "Alarm" just came on, "Rain in the Summertime", my kind of music !!

Barry,
Not only are the iPod's great, but I'm finding out all Apple products are pretty good!! I'm sitting on my couch watching TV, using my iBook G4 wirelessly, and listening to my iPod!!!!!
I guess I'll be puuting back that 15 pounds I lost since the summer!! :L

Just heard yesterday APPLE is finally going into the Windows world...they are going to be IBM compatible.....APPLE will catch up with Dell quickly once they to to XP...

For C1 / C2 use.......... ;-)

Barry,

So, here's what I want for my midyear. ;)

Using an updated factory-appearance radio, with an AUX input, I'm assuming that I can use any input device that will provide a signal out that I can connect to the new AUX in. A notebook computer, for instance.

What I would really like is a "wireless speaker" system that would allow me to set up four speakers and a sub-woofer outside the car for.....Carlisle....as an example. :gap

In fact, I'd like to sit up to 50 feet away from the car and have full control of the music.

Any ideas how to pull it all together?

ChrisR,

Just do what I'm doing: Dancing around in the basement to all the tunes I'm not allowed to listen to LOUD around the house ! That'll put off a few LB's.

67HEAVEN,

Seeing what you can do with cars, I can't imagine that you can't do just about anything you want with audio. I KNOW it can be done; just need to get the right "geek" to hook you up. And I think Barry is that kind of guy; he's a "gear head" AND a "geek head"; best of both worlds !!

Bernie, all those things are possible with that new cool iPod! :)
like i said, we would be happy to help you with it whenever you want, just say when!

Chris, i've been running all Macs here at home for years and won't own anything else, especially after using the many Windows based laptops work used to supply me with - all crap, every single one of them. Spent more times getting repaired than I had them for use but my Macs keep running with no problems. :)

Collin, not quite. Apple will be switching in 2006 to using Intel processors rather than the Motorola PowerPC processing chips. Mac OSX, the operating system will be reconfigured to operate on the Intel processor on the Macs but they won't be running Windows (thank god!), they will still be running the Mac operating system which is still much better than Windows ( ok everyone, yes, that's my opinion, and if you don't agree than fine but lets not turn this into a Windows/Mac debate). The Macs will NOT be running Windows as an operating system , although with the Intel processor it will be possible as I understand it to also install Windows as a secondary operating system on the computer if you really wanted to to run Windows based programs but the main operating system will still be Macintosh.

think along the lines of those LAN party rigs only setup more for sound I'll bet it could be done fairly easily

Bob, the updated factory radio with an AUX input is easy, many of the radio repair places can do this for you easily as you know.
yes, with the AUX input pretty much any source can be used - an iPOD, another type of MP3 or CD player, the laptop computer via the audio out jack on the laptop, etc

Thew wireless speakers may be a bit more difficult. I've come across a few of them in the past and they ALL sucked but it's been a while since I've even looked so perhaps there may be something new out on the market that is decent. The biggest issue with a wireless speaker system is that wireless usually means it's meant to be portable so most people want it to be small and lightweight. At the same time to be wireless means the amp to run the speakers must be built in to the speaker set and any decent quality amplifier has some weight and bulk to it therefore eliminating the small, lightweight idea. If it's small and lightweight it's going to pretty much suck - see the circle here causing the problem?

I'll try to do a little online searching though for you and see if i can't dig up anything that may work out but as you may recall not too long ago I made a few suggestions for you and one of them was a set of decent full-range speaker boxes you could mount in the back of your car but also be removable to the outside and with long speaker wires you could easily pull them 25'-50' away from the car and play them with the car radio.

WOW !!

Barry (and all )

Again, I am SO FAR away from all this tech stuff I'm embarrassed !! I know I've helped you (Barry) with a couple of little things on your car that you would have eventually figured out yourself, but, damn, this tech stuff is WAY past my little pea brain's capabilities, except in VERY small doses !!

I'm just a "gear head" that's that __ close to being a "Bubba" ! Learned everything I know from making mistakes and/or paying for it ! But sure will appreciate being drug into the 21'st century (kicking and screaming) a little at a time !

HAPPY NEW YEAR (is it REALLY 2006 and not 1966 !!) to EVERYONE ON THE CAC; you guys really are a wealth a knowledge to the uninformed.
