Nothing is wrong with it besides it looks like there is some rust under the mirror surface so instead of 1) buying a new remake for 40 bucks 2) buying a cheap one from pep boys. Can I just take it off, take the mirror part out clean off the rust or what ever is causeing it to have a spider vain of rust crack under the surface of the mirror? Then just re paint it black.

You can take the glass/mirror out but you will need to take it to a mirror shop to get it re-silvered.

tom...

If you don't care about originality...I would go to the junkyard, get an Auto-Dimming Electrochromatic Mirror w/Compass & Temp from another GM car (such as a '99 Yukon). I did this for my '87 Monte and it's completely awesome. I got the mirror for only $10 and got the temp sensor for $16 from the dealer. I will be doing this to the Vette as well.

I dont know that might look odd in a 81 corvette. You think any one would notice it not a 81 corvetter mirror? Thats all I really care about.

Check out this link and scroll to the bottom of the page:

There's a pic of what it looks like....pretty much the same except for the little bottom bump. Although they also make ones that look slightly different.

The whole look think I think is a matter of preference and it's hard for me to imagine what it would look like also. It also hard to separate the thought of what it's "supposed" to look like ya know. Just food for thought!

That does look cool but since my mirror sticks to the glass you would see the wires running I think.

Actually, that's the way the all are. There's a metal clip that's glued to the windshield. It's a standard GM thing, and you unscrew the mirror and it slides up and off. The new mirror will slide right on, and the wires just go straight up into the windshield trim. It's not too intrusive. Check out some of the newer cars...you probably don't even realize it unless you're looking!
