That's how I would describe the material I found the light bulbs of my tail lamps in. I've never changed tail lamp bulbs before and when I FINALLY go the rear facia off my corvette, I found the light bulbs in their socket but with this peanut butter looking material in there as well.

I had to take of the rear facia to have it painted by a friend and I figured I'd replace the tail bulbs so I would not have to go thorugh this nightmare again. Can someone tell me if that material is there to keep moisture out? That would be my guess. I bought new bulbs, but I don't want to install them until I know for sure in case I need to clean them out.

Thanks for the help and for the ideas in removing my rear facia.

It's probably just dried-out dielectric grease to keep moisture from corroding the fixture, as you've already guessed.

You are 100% correct Ken. The stuff really works!:w

Go to a marine store & get a spray can of TC-9, it was developed for NASA, and it is an excellent coating for electric connections, & it works well.
(I use it on my boat as well as any connections on all of my cars.
