I have alway jacked the rear of cars using the pumpkin of the rear end.
Recently I was told the on Corvettes not to do that because it may cause the cover of the rear end to crack. Is this really true??

My Corvette mechanic does it that way and I cringe every time. I prefer to jack it at the frame rails on the sides and place jackstands as far outboard on the frame as I can get them.

No way would I do that. I only jack it up from the frame rails. I also place a 2x4 on the jack or jack stands to more evenly distribute the pressure on the frame rails.

I never understood why you can't use the diff. All of the weight of the car is transferred from the rear spring to the mounting flange of the diff anyway.

Anybody have the "real" reason for this? :pat:

You know, a great way to jack-up (sarcastic) the rear of a Vette is to lift it by the tie rods. I had a Vette that someone jacked up by jacking the tie rods- bent them so bad it looked like my car was pigeon toed.
