Well next week I start my cam and heads swap. Can I jack the front of the car on the crossmember under the engine, or do I have to do a side at a time.

Thanks
Fred

I jack mine up that way.
Anywhere along the frame is OK with me.
If I jack it under the engine, it has to be balanced so it doesn't tip to the side.

If your doing a cam and heads swap, you should already know the fundementals of jacking :D

Thanks very much for the smartass comment. I probably swapped my first cam out before you were born. I certainly don't need the smartass comments.

I appreciate your coment, but I didn't intent to be smart azz.

BTW, My 1st Vette was a 1965 coupe in 1968, I was 18 years old.
I've owned 5 Vettes in my life. 55 years old. :L

But I did give you an honest answer to your question.

Where to place the jack?

The question is a good one for someone new to the Corvette hobby because I was there at one time and I wanted to be sure the place I positioned the jack and jack stands was strong enough it would not be bent. My 96 came with floor damage on both sides because of improper jack or lift cleat placement that I straightened when I had all the interior out of it for cleaning and refurbishing.

Regards, Greg

Someone told me once that the roof should be removed so it don't crack when you jacking up the car on one side. I never exercised that cause I didn't believe it. I often wonder about jacking up such a flexing vehicle....other cars...I don't think twice about using any part of the frame. ;shrug

There can't be a whole lot of flex in a vette frame when you jack on the front jack pad and also lift the rear wheel. Think about the uneven aproaches going into drives and parking lots. When I get onto one of those I sometimes wonder if my back wheel is coming off the ground. ;LOL I think the only real concern is to be on the frame and not catch any body parts or mechanical parts.

I don't think there is a lot of flex in the frames either. I know for a fact that they will balance on three jackstands. It will actually teeter and end up on two (opposite corners) with just the slightest bit of help. I don't recommend this, my hydraulic cylinder in the jack failed as I was positioning my jackstands. Pretty scary.

That's fine, put some jack stands under after it's up & if you pull the wheels you'll have an easier time dancing around the engine bay.

Good luck.

Heres what I do I release the doors the hood and the hatch. If you look you will see locations indicated for lifting the front and rear wheel. Go along that point until you are just behind the mirror. Jack the entire side of the car up and put jack stands under the frame. Go to the other side and do the same thing now the car is off the ground on 4 jack stands. Oh and dont forget to loosen the lug nuts on the wheels before you lift them off the ground. Much easier to torque them loose then. Off course if you are just working on the front you can do the front end only. My only reason for putting the whole car up in the air is it has less tendency to roll off the jack stands that way.:D :J
