hi all

since my car sat for 10 1/2 months at the paint shop, I need to now get it in for service. I do want to eventually learn how to do all this stuff myself, but for the immediate time I just want it serviced and done with.

This is my "list" of items I want the shop to check out and do to the car - pretty much a "Spring maintainance service list" only it's mid-summer ;LOL
I just want to make sure everything is checked for proper operation and the car is safe to drive.

Am I missing anything important here?

Change oil * 6 quart oil system (use API C1-4 15W-40) - (see note below)
Change oil filter
Check coolant – replace if needed
Clean and re-oil air filter
Remove, clean, and reinstall Crankcase ventilation valve
Check sparkplugs – if need new ones, replace with R45’s
Check brake fluid
Check and adjust valves (solid lifter motor) - go by included instructions to set the valves COLD - (see note below)
Check rear posi unit fluid
Check timing and dwell
Check for proper idle, mixture, float level, etc on Carb
Grease/Lube all fittings on suspension
Check Steering box
Check tires and brakes

**Check EVERYTHING on suspension and drive train for proper tolerances and safe driving condition

** I MAY decide to have them do a compression and leak-down test just to make sure the rings and stuff are all good.

notes:
* the oil was a recommendation by SWCDuke (on the "other" site)
* the valve adjustment instructions comes from JohnZ and SWCDuke

I tried to think of everything that should be checked but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything important here. Thanks a lot!

Barry -
You shold probably give them your desired timing specs otherwise they will not know what to check against

On brake fluid and coolant, I'm not aware of any tests that can differentiate between good and bad - except for the very subjective color test (yup its cloudy....). Brake fluid and coolant should be changed every 2 years for maximum life of components. If you don't know how long the fluid has been in use, change it and start the 2 year timer.

Brian

thanks Brian.
The car was restored just before I bought it last Spring so I've had it a little over a year now and who knows how long the coolant and brake fluid were in the car DURING the restoration which I'm told was a 4-year project.
I guess I'm best off just having them drain and replace both of those fluids.
Thanks for the info on that. I wasn't aware those fluids were only good for 2 years.

What timing specs should I give the shop on my 327/365??

Barry,
My goodness, you have covered things very well! The only thing I can add (I'm anal retentive) is that I tend to disconnect electrical connections in the engine compartment and re-connect with di-electric grease. If I see any copper oxide (green), that comes off with #0000 steel wool. Typically this is not an acute situation but a Saturday afternoon browse-through that adds electrical protection for years to come.

I am not a fan of diesel oil but JohnZ has much more knowledge than me. Go with it. Nevertheless, I will stick with Mobil 1 and a Delco PF-35 filter.

I love your check-list!

thanks Paul!
good idea on the dielectric grease. i never thought of that one.
I guess from yours and Brians replies though that I must not have missed anything major. I was racking my brain trying to think of all the most important areas to have them check but since I'm not a mechanic I was afraid I'd miss something.

Barry,
The Wife and I had a great drive this morning before the heat set in. Loved it! Then parked it, as shown. No A/C as noted before. My favourite event of the year is on July 31. I will post pics if the weather holds up.

BTW,
Bob's NXT treatment is on that car. Not too shabby !

Barry, in your suspension lube, don't forget to also lube the clutch cross-shaft under the hood, this is often overlooked by the shops if you have it done there. (Paul doesn't have this problem on his '67, neither do I on my '66!!)

Best wishes and many happy years of driving to you!!

Paul

still have a bunch of detailing on my car yet to go but the heat here over the last few days since I picked her up has been bad so I've been waiting for it to cool down. Today wasn't too bad so the wife and I decided to go over to a local cruise-in/show that is held every Sunday. Stayed a few hours, had fun, than came home. Was still d*mn hot in my non-A/C car also but we both had a great time considering it's been almost 11 months since we had a chance to enjoy the car last. Next few days are supposed to get REALLY bad here but car is going in for service so I won't be driving anyway. Decided to hold off on the remainder of the detailing until after the service as I'm sure the shop will dirty it up anyway.

BTW, you know everytime you post a pic of your car it makes me drool!

Thanks Ron! I wasn't aware of that area - that's the reason for my thread, to see if I missed anything important! :)

Barry-
I don't have my manual in front of me but I think the timing is all in by 2350 and I think it starts at 750 or so. Initial should be around 10 and total w/o vacuum should be 36. Maybe someone with the facts should chime in.

I got the fluid recommendations from Duke. Brake fluid (dot 3,4) absorbs moisture over time and the corrosion inhibitor in the coolant looses its effivtiveness. Probably overkill but we're all kind of crazy....

well, she is dropped off at the shop now. I was talking to the owner for a while when I dropped her off and he seems to be familiar with these old cars and he has donne a lot of work on older vettes. A '66 'vert was in the shop when i was there along with a '71? Nova hot-rod. My painter who ONLY works on older cars recommended him so we will see........ The shop owner also just sold his '68 Camaro so again he must be at least somewhat familiar with these old cars and motors. That's more than I can say about most of the shops and mechanics around here.
I still took over and left my '65 shop manual just in case, along with a copy of JohnZ's article on how to adjust the valves cold and Lar's (from the "other site") article on peak timing method. I explained I wasn't trying to insult him or his shop by bringing in the articles to use- only that I've had problems with past mechanics on this car and that these methods have worked for others so I wished to try them on my car. He was very understanding and amicable to my wishes. Turns out he was aware of setting the valves cold rather than the standard "hot and running" and prefers it. Not sure if he was using the same exact procedure as John's but it 's a start and he now has John's info to work off of.

Before I could tell him that my painter recommended him he saw my car and asked if it was the same one that had been in Joe's shop getting painted. He had been there a few weeks ago and saw my car and recognized it today so is also aware that it's fresh out of the paint shop and that they need to be extra careful while working on it.
Now I just have to wait a few days and than see how good of a job they do........ I'm not going to rush them and they can have it for the rest of the week if they need, but he thinks it should be done in 2-3 days.

Gotta tell you guys, after finally getting it back out of the paint shop after 10 1/2 months, it wasn't easy to leave it elsewhere again and watch the car get smaller and smaller as the wife and I drove away leaving her there.........

Oh-oh.... Here we go again... :eyerole I hope you've used up all your "bad" luck for this year. After what you've been through, I'd be sleeping in the car until I got it back.

I'm sure it will turn out great. You seem to have found where the "good old boys" are working (and I don't mean Bubba). Its gonna scream when you get it back.

i've thought that before with mechanics on this car so I'll decide AFTER I get the car back...........
