Are there any clearance issues? (The filter is significantly taller than the one I had on last summer)

thanks

For what its worth:::
I changed my oil & filter a few weeks ago.
I used a K&N for the 1st time & everything was OK,
filled with 5 QTS. of Mobil 1 & the dipstick showed a perfect fill.

Same thing here,
Perfect fit no clearance problems.

I used one for the first time on my car and there were no problems. However the guy at auto zone told me that I did not need to change it with every oil change. I dont know if i like the sound of that. I did however pay more money for it. Is that true? Oh and one last thing, do you all fill the oil fitler before installing?

I filled the filter before installing it on mine I always do this now ever since I ruined all of the bearings in my "other" car (guinea pig) atleast it wasn't in the vette.

About the filter...

I would change the filter with every oil change... or even before changing the oil, say every 2 to 3 thousand miles just for extra insurance. Fill the filter with new oil when you do this and you can get rid of some of the dirty oil.

i always fill the filter so the engine doesn't have to.

I wouldn't take his advice too seriously if that is any indication of his knowledge of engine lubrication. :nono

That sounds like advise from an "old timer". Back in the '50s it was common to change the oil every 1,000 miles and the filter every other change.

Me too. But, on the K&N, I put ONE on my car. It went below my oil pan by about an inch ot so, with the "nut" I went to pull it on the lift when I put my newe wheels and tires on. It was raining lightly, I didn't have anyone guiding me on the lift.

As I pulled on, my car bound up alittle as it often does, I opened my door to look down for sme reason and there was a Lot of darkish "runoff" that I noted behind the front wheel. Way more than seemed likely, I immediately shut the car off to find damn near 5 Qt's of oil under my car and a broken adapter to the block :( :cry

Yet another early loss of Mobil 1, another $50 oil change add $30 (cost) for the adapter, or whatever you call it out of The General, $75 oil change at 600 mi.

NAPA GOLD for me now :)

Interesting you also have an 86. I use K&N all the time and have never had any problems. Filling the new filter with oil before installing it is excellent advice, but I would not recommend it on a ZR1.:L

Before the K&N oil filter i always ran AC delco and changed the oil every 2200 to 2500 miles. I change the filter every oil change, what is the difference between the AC delco and the K&N filter other than the 10 bucks. Do any of you use a magnetic drain plug or a filter magnet.

AC Delco on mine, magnetic plug, AND filter magnet.
almost due for first oil change since adding those.

The Delco's are very good filters for the money. They cost us about $5.00 or so around here. I can't site the source but someone did a study on oil filters and their areas of filtration. The Delco ranked very high as did the Purolator Pure One (which I use on my Toyota). They didn't have the K&N tested because I don't think it was out yet. The Mobil 1 filter was ranked very high, if not the highest.

I used to use Mobil 1 until my local shop stopped stocking it; then I made the switch over to the K&N. The 1" hex is really great. No more oil wrench for me! :w

I use the K&N filter because of the 1" nut. I expect that any of the oil filters from good manufacturers will do the job handsomely. But getting a regular filter off is the part of changing oil I detest... I can never get decent leverage or clearance with my big hands... and I've never worked with a filter wrench that I felt was really worth a damn... there's a lot of different designs of filter wrenches and all of them work poorly.

It's positively shocking to me that all oil filters do not include a big nut like the K&N. It's just such an obvious and simple improvement.

As for clearance... no issues on mine. If your new filter is much taller than the old, I'd be double and triple checking the part numbers. There are typically a few different part numbers that will fit that have differing heights. I don't remember my K&N oil filter being any particularly different dimension than the AC Delco filter I replaced.

I double checked but the filter K&N recommended was 1 1/2" taller than the filter I took off. (nut included) I sat down and opened up all the K&N filter boxes and started comparing threads and found one that was almost exact to the recommended one. Unfortunately that one was even taller :mad

I can order the correct one from K&N but I need the part number :cry

Next time one of you guys replaced your filter could you PLEASE post the part number here so I can buy myself one

Thanks

Will

On my 96, the part number is HP-2001.

On your 87, the part number is listed as HP-2002. There's a note that it will fit if you have an 8 at the 8th digit in your VIN number. If it is not, it looks like they don't have a listing.

The K&N website lets you look all this stuff up. You can find filters by car type, part number cross reference (so you can find the matching K&N for your previous filter), or dimensions (so you can find any K&N filter that will fit).

I just was on the K&N web page and they show an HP-2002 for my 86. I don't know which one I got the first time, but it was an extra long filter. I used it cause I wanted the little extra oil I could add, but it didn't work out well, see page 1.
