I found out my Keisler 5 speed may hit the tunnel unless the car is shimmed to raise the body. Has anypne used rubber body mounts on a 63 solid mount car?
Thanks

I cant comment on a 63 with rubber mounts. But I did mount my 62 to my new chasy with rubber mounts and I am not happy with it . I have some minor cowl shake and I atribute it to the rubber mounted body,I have about a 1/2 of what I thought was a firm solid rubber but I can see it is compressing more then what I had originally had it set at.

tunnel clearance

Hello
I don't know if this is any help to you, but I do know a guy who raised the body on his mid year convt and inch,( all mounts) so he could get his hood to shut with his custom engine( 540 in motor @ 860 -880 hp)

Seems like a very common problem. It has been suggested by Keisler that some floor pans and tunnel are sagging and causing this issue. I installed a Keisler tremec 450 in mine two years ago. I had no vibration issues and I used their supplied rear tranny mount. Then this past winter I rebuilt the entire rear suspension. Upon completion I now have a vibration. I have attributed this to that when I rebuilt the rear suspension I replaced the crushed front differential rubber mount and have now changed the pinion angle. I then bought a poly rear tranny mount to compensate and correct the angle of the tranny. Well this then put the tranny firmly against the tranny tunnel. So after looking at my sagging floor pan I have shimmed it up with about .500 worth of shims and .300 of hard rubber to isolate the frame from the body. If this does not correct the problem I will turn back to my previous work. However this is the best train of thought and long short of it.. Some have required shiming the body to get it to clear the transmission.. Dave..

I did a similar thing- I stuck some old leftover rear spring cushions on top of the crossmember near the tunnel on both sides and it gave me a ton of extra clearance. Didn't hurt the rest of the body shimming either. It'll creak a little when you wedge em in, but it won't break the floor.

Tunnel-fit seems to be a reoccurring problem in some of the installations of the Tremec 5-Speed in C1s, C2s and C3s: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1189270 http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1171619 It seems the problem stems from the Tremec being longer than the Muncie or T-10 transmissions, and the supplied 1330 yoke being larger than the original 1310 yoke. With the Tremec being longer, this pushes the connection further back in the tunnel, which in many cars apparently doesn't have the necessary width to clear the larger 1330 yoke. In talking to the people at Classic Chevy 5-Speed, it seems they have paid attention to the Corvette slip yoke size problem and has come out with these smaller size yokes to help make the Corvette/TKO installation a bit easier and problem-free. They emailed me pictures of their new 1310 strap yoke: http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/1310%20C6%20strap%20yoke%202.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/1310%20C6%20strap%20yoke.JPG As you can see from the pictures, it measures 3 1/2" across the diameter and about 3 3/4" across the diagonal. This should be narrow enough to clear any C1, C2 or C3 tunnel, I believe. Plus, its a strap yoke, which would be much easier to install than the press fit yokes. The price is very reasonable - $149. I just ordered one, so I'll let you know what it looks like when I get it.

Unless I'm wrong, the yoke cap diameter is a different size than the yoke body, can this be the correct cap on http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/1310 C6 strap yoke 2.JPG?

Hope their quality control is better than their photo appears to be.

To be honest it looks just like the one that Keisler now is suppling with there kit and sent out one to most previous clients..

I think Keisler is only charging 100 bucks for it though...

Strap yoke

This should help clear up any confusion.

Actually the caps are the correct diameter. Here is why: The inside diameter (ID) of the yoke (where the ujoint sits) is the same diameter as the ID of the strap (I have better pictures showing this if you would like to se them). The outside diameter of the yoke is smaller than the ID of the yoke because the yoke has a ridge/lip to capture and secure the ujoint. The strap has the same size OD and ID - it simply acts as a strap to hold the driveshaft in place.

To draw a comparison, the ubolts that hold the rear ujoint to the rear pinion yoke are of the same design - they are simply straps that secure the ujoint to the driveshaft.

The 1310 yoke looks similar to the pciture shown above because the same company makes that yoke as they do the 1310's. The difference is that the yoke pictured above is a 1330 size (which we also used to sell beacuse the 1310 was not avaiable) and the yoke pictured in the Classic Chevy 5-Speed link is a 1310 size which is smaller.

These strap style yokes are also avaialble in the larger 1330 and 1350 sizes and have been used successfully in hiogh horsepower racing applications for years. The 1310, 1330, & 1350 strap yokes, which are all bulit by the same company - Inland Empire Driveline, look the same but they are different sizes. If you would like to see it, I can email you a picture of a 1310 and 1330 yoke side by side so you can see the difference in size - the 1310's are samller so they will fit better in the Corvette tunnel. It is for this reason that we had these specially made for us.

The bottom line is that the caps are the correct size, the quality control is in place, the 1310 yokes are samller in size than the 1330's therfore they will fit better within the tunnel of a Corvette.

I hope this helps.

All this is interesting but back to the question. Has anyone had to raise the body to avoid conflicts with the transmission? I'm not just refering to the floor but the entire body. Specifically, has anyone done the conversion on a solid mount 63?
Thanks

No problem Ron.
I wil be posting a few mor epics comapring th esize of the 1310 strap yoke vs. the 1330 strap and a 1330 solid yoke.
The important measurement is the diagonal measurement which is the rotating diameter of the slip yoke. The 1310 measures 3.75" across, the the 1330 strap yoke measures 4.30" across and the 1330 solid stayle yoke measures 4.25" across.
This extra 1/2" of clearance should make this yoke fit much better within the tunnels of C1, C2's and C3's. A 1/2" is a lot of real estate in the tight tunnel.
Sincerelyt,

Here are some more pics Jeff sent me (see links below) comparing the 1310 strap yoke to the 1330 strap yoke (commonly used for with the C2’s and C3’s) as well as to a 1330 solid style yoke (commonly used for the C1’s). The 1310 strap yoke is ½” smaller across the diagonal than either of the two 1330 yokes. http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 strap yoke cap inner view.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 strap vs. 1330 strap comaprison 1.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 strap vs. 1330 strap comparison 2.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 strap yoke cap 2.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 vs. 1330 solid yoke.JPG http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/images/links/1310 strap yoke cap.JPG

Thanks Loren. Jeff sent me the photos also, but I couldn't post them for some reason. Looks like the new yoke design would be a winner, and the photos sure show it a lot better.

Thanks to Jeff also!!
