Ken's Engine Project... Part V - 2004

My builder still rags me about being able to squeeze more power from a carburetor, but then, he's a dinosaur too. :L

One last thing Ken , performance is not an issue with this TPI...it still breaths @ 6500 and will try to pull sideways in second....its bad ass fast:eek ...just frustrating sometimes:D

U remember his engine? Maybe a link will get more input. :w

Now another long thread I'm gonna have to find time to read :L my wife complains I spend too much time on the CAC now.

I don't know if this will help, but I had the opposite problem it would not idle high enough, it turns out the tab on the throttle linkage that the idle screw contacts to set idle speed (throttle opening) had bent and even with the adjustment screw all the way in it would not run where I wanted it. a little massage with a plier and it was fixed, but not after a lot of head scratching and checking of the TPS and IAC motor etc.

That reminds me. Have I mentioned my problem(?) with the TPS readings? :confused

One day, as I was fiddling with the laptop, just becoming familiar with the TEC3 system, I noticed that when I stood on the pedal - all the way to the floor, it (the reading, not the blades) hung up at full voltage. If I blipped the pedal a couple of times it would return to its normal range and function properly until I stood on it again. I should mention that all of this experimenting was done with the engine off! :L

I discovered that the tab the TPS uses to engage the throttle blade tab was rubbing against the throttle body when fully open, and sticking there when the blades returned closed. As far as I know it never occured while I was driving it, mainly due to the fact that I'm not sure I ever had it wide open and to the floor while driving. ;shrug

Anyway, the fix was easy - I removed the TPS and filed some excess material away from the tab, as well as de-burring the throttle body in that area. ;)

Wellllll......now that you mention it , if I blip the throttle after coming to a stop , the rpms drop about 200....maybe your on to something. Time to check.

Time to open up the old thread . Never know , might get some new responses and experiences.....Thanks Ken for shareing YOUR space.:)

Dave
Also thanks ,Bossvette , food for thought..

On a flatbed one more time...

:eyerole

What really amazes me is that I'm not even ****ed-off; I guess I'm getting used to this thing always being screwed up one way or another. :hb

Today, after I tweaked a few numbers, I was out running around grabbing some datalogs, when all of a sudden it went dead - no power to the TEC3, which means no fuel pump, no injectors, nothing from the engine management system. I did have power to the starter and lights, as well as the fans, but nothing to run the engine. ;shrug

Rick Clewett, my Electromotive guy, came to my rescue seeing as how his house is only a few miles from where I was, and we hot-wired the TEC3 and fuel pump to get me home at least. It worked for a while, until the Bosch pump wasn't getting fuel because the in-tank pump had lost power. I made it a little ways before it died again, with all indications being that I was out of fuel (which I'm not - I just filled it this morning ;)).

So, it was "Hello AAA" again. Now I gotta track down what the wiring bug-a-boo is. :hb

By the way, today was a good example of why mechanical gauges are the way to go - I lost everything, including tachometer and speedometer, but I still was able to track my coolant temperature, oil temperature, and oil pressure. One less worry to think about when something like that goes wrong. ;)

Ken, we dicovered the same thing while trying to figure out na hunting idle problem in Nevada a week or two back.

Man AAA again? You are getting WAY more patient man :L :w

Well, I got it running again today. I sat in my seat and turned the key on, then I reached under the dash and stuck my finger in the hole for the a/c outlet (the little one in the hush panel under the dash) where I still haven't reinstalled all of the dashboard ductwork. By moving the a/c tube around with my finger with the key "on", the gauges, fuel pumps, and everything else came back to life. I think I discovered the approximate location of my loose wire. :cool

Now, to paraphrase an old Bobby North song that Dr. Demento used to play ...

"I have to get in and get under, get in and get under... to fix up my automobile." :eyerole

At least it's running again. ;)

I can't find it! I must have fooled around under there for over an hour. :hb

At first I could duplicate the problem but not actually see where it was breaking contact; after a while of fiddling with it I couldn't even get it to break contact.

The only thing I can think of, that I could have done, was when I was manipulating the harness to try and find the break, I could have pushed a loose wire back into its terminal and now it's being held firmly in place. ;shrug

Oh well, it's a pain but a least I know where to look first if it quits on me again. :eyerole
