Newby here.

I just bought my 1995 a few days ago and didn't get a PKE transmitter. I went to a local dealer, who happened to have one in stock, and forked over the $200 for the transmitter and programming.

It does okay locking the passenger door and opening the hatch, but it isn't automatically unlocking/locking (sounding horn) when I approach or leave the vehicle. I've heard this was purposely done by an old owner by removing a fuze.

Do I want to reconnect the fuze for this option? Any pros or cons you can throw out?

When I originally went to the dealer to have this done, I figured it would work like other alarm keychains by pushing a button and unlocking/locking the doors. Is this possible on the stock PKE?

what you need to do is turn the system on. since the hatch and passenger door open with the fob, everything sounds ok...

To turn the system on, get near the car, close enough to be in range of the system. Press and hold the door unlock button. After 5-10 seconds, the locks with lock then unlock. The system is now on. to turn it off follow the same procedure. it is not possible to use PKE like a 'normal' keyless entry system, but once it is activated you will probably like the way it works.

Okay. I tried your instructions. After about 10 or so seconds, I heard the doors unlock. I kept pushing the button but they never relocked. Leaving them unlocked, I walked back inside and nothing happened. No horn honking, etc.

I know the horn works with the system because I accidently set it off the other day.

Any other suggestions?

If I remember the way my 96 functioned, I activated (and deactivated) the PKE just the way it was described but I always started with the car unlocked first and the doors closed.

Pressing and holding the door button on the fob caused the system to cycle the doors to lock and then unlock. I'd release the button on the fob and walk away - the horn would honk and the doors would lock letting me know that the system was active.

Repeat the process to deactivate the system.
Can you try this again and let us know what happens?

1 Place the transmitter and any optional transmitters 10 ft or more away from the car.
2 Turn the ignition key to the ON position
3 push the TRIP/ODO button twice
4WITH IN 5 SECONDS push the FUEL/INFO button until the PKE light on the driver information center stays on.
5Turn the ignition OFF, but leave the key in the ignition... The PKE light will begin to flash.
6 Ready to program! Bring the first Transmitter into range. Once the system has programmed the Flashing will pause. Repeat step 6 for each transmitter.
7 Remove the key and your done.

Note on #5
When you turn the ignition to OFF it is just one click back.

As usual, USER ERROR.

The owner's manual says:

"Press DOOR on the PKE until the door locks cycle (about two seconds).

Then turn the ignition on and see if PKE shows up in the info center (it didn't)."

I was holding the button in and hearing some clicking and thought this was the cycle they meant. When I held the button in longer, the doors actually unlocked. Then when I turned on the ignition, the PKE lit up on the info center. I got out, walked away and sure enough, it locked and honked.

Eek gads! I think it's time for the CAC to block my access. What would I do if I had a "real" problem.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. One way or another, it's working!
