At Englishtown today, a ZR1 running the autocross course took a unplanned dive into the lake that bordered the course - through the chainlink fence, here she is...

Kinda hard to explain to the insurance agent isn't it. How badly was it damaged.

I suppose that is 1 way to get the car washed. Who would autocross their C4 with the targa top off. That makes alot of difference in handling. Expensive error.

:bar

Oh man... :( That really sucks. I hope there's no curse on ZR-1's there, as I'll be up there tomorrow (1/4 mile track only).

:eek OhMyGod!!!! Guess I left a little too early. Was this a result of a catastrophic failure of the CAR or the DRIVER?

I left early and missed that one!!! I walked down to the autocross area and remember seeing that guy run his car. I think the roof was off due to his hight. With the helmut on if I recall his head was above the roofline. I feel terrible for the guy!!! It was a great show!!! Im part of the Vette club that puts the show on and recall checking the car in at the entrance. If you look at the windshield those are the dots that I put on for him to autocross!!! Hopefully more CAC members can make next years event. No swimming allowed next year!

Hydro locked Mercury Marine motor cheap!!!

Sucker damn near made it all the way across the lake hoping skipping like the 80 mph rock it looked to be.

Oh well at least he has a perfectly nice roof panel to sell to get some of his money back.

It'll dry out in a few days. I am sure it is salvagable.

You are right - it FLEW! :eek

No marks at all on the beach, as the ZR1 sailed into the water :eek

What A Shame

Someone is in for a lot of work and a lot of $$$$ laid out:(

Tough thing about insurance is that most of us are all guilty of this. We get collector car insurance and it specifically says that we are not insured for racing etc. Of course almost everyone at the Raceway Park show either ran their cars down the drag strip or autocrossed. How the hell do you explain to the insurance agent that your car rolled into a lake at Raceway Park!!!! Looks like this fella will be writing some serious checks out if he had collector insurance on his car.

Wow I don't feel so bad about the little bit of damage I did to my 96 after loosing it in an S turn and hitting an embankment. Only $1400 worth I got off easy.:D

I was wondering about that... from what my insurance (Nationwide) says, I’m pretty sure my LT4 would not be covered for such an incident at a track event.

Wow, what a sick feeling that must be. You know that he most likely went home and beat himself up over such a mistake.

That was something to watch. It was like slow motion as it happened. We saw him start to loose it, and we all started yelling. He was heading to the fence, and went right under it! There was an eight inch curb that he went up and it launched the car into the water. To answer your question, no he wasn't hurt, just shaken a bit. He got lucky that it stayed flat and didn't flip. We felt pretty bad for him. A few of us had been thinking of useing the track till that happened. His was the last run, they put everything away after that. I have some pics in my phone I will try to post. (New phone if I can figure it out.) Main thing was he was O.K.

...actually, he went home and then contacted me to blur the plate in the pictures :ugh I went one step further and removed them completely.

I have never auto-crossed before so excuse me if this is a dumb question, but how fast do you get going? I mean, it just seems that he was going pretty good for all this to have happened.

Those pictures make me sick to my stomach:ugh :cry

I hope when it comes time to sell that the prospective buyers would be told of the water intrusion even if it is much later down the road. That vehicle would be totaled by the insurance company. I wish him the best in getting it straightened out.
